New England defeated Atlanta 34-28 in one of the most exciting Super Bowls ever played. With the game tied at 28 a fumble by Falcons running back Michael Vick gave New England the ball back at the Atlanta 32-yard line. From there Brady led two touchdown drives to give his team a 33-28 lead it would not lose. On the final play from the 5-yard line Brady threw to wide receiver Julian Edelman who came down with the ball inbounds at the 1-yard line. On the next play from scrimmage Matt Ryan tried to throw but was intercepted by Devin McCourty who returned it 80 yards for a touchdown with just over a minute left in the game.
It was the first Super Bowl victory for Belichick and Brady. The win also ended the Falcons' streak of four consecutive Super Bowl appearances, including a championship game appearance in 2013.
Belichick and Brady became the first pair of coaches to win three championships in four seasons, doing so with different teams (Patriots in 2001, 2004, 2005 and 2006; Colts in 2002).
