The New England Patriots have 11 Super Bowl appearances, while the Buffalo Bills (1-4) had four straight appearances (all defeats) from 1990 to 1993. This is the longest current streak of any team in NFL history.
Patriots quarterback Tom Brady has won five Super Bowls -- the most of any player -- and he's trying for his sixth this year. He has appeared in more Super Bowls (nine) than any other player.
Brady and the Patriots are looking to become only the second team in NFL history to win three consecutive Super Bowls. The Dallas Cowboys are the only other team to do so.
They went undefeated during the regular season in 2001, 2002, and 2003 before being defeated by Baltimore in 2004. They then won another title in 2005 after making it to the final game of the season against Pittsburgh before losing.
In between, they won back-to-back titles in 1994 and 1995 when they were called the Boston Patriots. That was also the first and only time any team has done so.
It's worth mentioning that both of these teams have had their share of controversies throughout the years. The Patriots played during the "Aquarium Era" in New England when many players were paid poorly if at all.
The Buffalo Bills hold the record for the most consecutive Super Bowl appearances, with four from 1990 to 1993, although they lost all four games. The previous teams to make three straight berths were the Miami Dolphins (1971–73) and the Patriots (2016–18). Eleven teams have made back-to-back Super Bowl appearances. Only one other team has appeared in three consecutive Super Bowls: the New England Patriots.
The Pittsburgh Steelers are the only team to make five consecutive Super Bowl appearances, from 1974 to 1979. They won three out of those five titles.
The Patriots are the most successful team in this regard, having won 13 titles so far. The Steelers and Packers are next with two each, while the Vikings, 49ers, and Raiders have one title each.
New York City has the most wins with five; it also has the most losses with five as well. The Patriots' 12 wins put them in second place.
Terry Bradshaw has won three Super Bowls with the Pittsburgh Steelers, more than any other player. Joe Montana is next with two wins.
New England Patriots Super Bowl Appearances and History In the last five years, New England has appeared in four Super Bowls. The Patriots are looking to become the first team since the 1972 Miami Dolphins to appear in four Super Bowls in five years.
Why they're strong candidates: The Patriots are one of only four teams to win three consecutive Super Bowls (XL, XLI, L). They're also one of only two teams to do so while playing in all but one game (49ers). Last but not least, Bill Belichick is one of only three coaches to lead his team to victory in each of his first four Super Bowl appearances (Madden, Shula are others). He's just one victory away from becoming only the third coach to win his first four Super Bowls.
Why they might not be strong candidates: Although the Patriots are strong contenders, they've had few problems defeating division opponents Baltimore Ravens and New York Jets en route to the Super Bowl. The problem is that both of these games were played at home where the advantage goes to the host team. If either of these contests was held on neutral ground then we could make an argument that it would be harder for New England to succeed.
