New Orleans has a unique relationship with both the National Football League (NFL) and its champion Seattle Seahawks. Because no city has won more than two Super Bowls, many people assume that New Orleans is excluded from hosting future games. This is not true; however, none of these opportunities have been awarded yet. If New Orleans were to win the Super Bowl this year, it would be the second time that the city has done so. It earned this honor by beating out Los Angeles for the right to host Super Bowl XLV in 2010.
The New Orleans Bowl is one of two bowl games held each year at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana. Due to Hurricane Katrina, the 2005 game was played on December 20 at Cajun Field on the campus of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in Lafayette, Louisiana. Florida International defeated South Carolina 31-27 in that game.
In its first season, the New Orleans Bowl attracted a record crowd of 51,619 people to the stadium. The highest attendance ever recorded at the New Orleans Bowl was 59,115 people in 2003 when LSU defeated Southern Mississippi 33-30 in overtime. That mark was broken in 2004 when UL again defeated Southern Miss 33-30 in OT. Last year's game drew another large crowd (51,619) but it wasn't enough to break the tie between UL and USM for the title. Florida International edged South Carolina 31-27 in 2005 before a crowd of only 10,000.
The New Orleans Bowl is funded by multiple sources including contributions from each school participating in the game. Since its inception in 2002, Florida International has been paid $1 million while South Carolina has received $750,000. In addition, both schools receive a share of revenue from ticket sales, television contracts, and other events completed during the year.
New Orleans has hosted the Super Bowl 11 times, tying Miami for the most in NFL history, with 7 of those games taking place in the Superdome. The city of New Orleans last hosted the event in 2013, when the Baltimore Ravens defeated the San Francisco 49ers 34-31.
The first Super Bowl was held at Tulane University in New Orleans on January 26, 1967, with the Los Angeles Rams defeating the Houston Oilers 14-7 before a crowd of 75,821 fans. The game was moved to its current location, the Louisiana Superdome, the following year.
New Orleans has been selected as a host city for each of the subsequent Super Bowls. The only other city that has been chosen more than once is Dallas, which has also hosted games III, IV, IX, and X.
New Orleans has always been a destination for sports fans, with football being the most popular sport. The Saints began play in 1969 and have become a force in the NFL ever since. They have won over 10,000 regular season games while only losing more than two games three times.

The NFL also like visiting New Orleans. In the 1970s, the city hosted the Super Bowl four times: twice in the 1980s, twice in the 1990s, and once in the 1980s. The most recent Super Bowl was held in New Orleans in 2013. Los Angeles is catching up to Miami and New Orleans in terms of population growth. But it's still a small market compared with those two cities.
The Rams will be playing their home games at the new $1 billion stadium downtown that has been named "Stadium Joes." The game will be played on February 5th, 2019.
The Saints will be playing their home games at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome until they move into their new $650 million custom-built stadium in 2020. The game will be played on February 3rd, 2019.
Miami has had three Super Bowls over the last ten years. And New Orleans has had one every decade since the 1970s. These are the only two cities that have had multiple appearances.
There have been 33 Super Bowls so far. The most recent season was 2017. The next one will be played in February 2019. The regular season starts on September 10th, 2018. The playoffs start early - April 25th, 2019 - just four months from now!
