San Diego, California San Diego hasn't hosted a Super Bowl since 2003, when the Buccaneers thrashed the Raiders after Oakland's center went on a bender in Tijuana, Mexico. The Chargers' last trip to the big game was in 1994, when they lost to the Cowboys 34-27 in Miami.
They have been trying to get back ever since, but have yet to win another season. The last time they made the playoffs was in 2005, when they lost to Pittsburgh in the first round. They haven't had a winning record since 2001, when they went 9-7.
The lack of success has been due to poor management and coaching, as well as a weak division. The Chargers used to play in Los Angeles, but moved to San Diego in 1961 when it became a separate city from Los Angeles. The two cities are separated by about 50 miles of Pacific Ocean coastline with San Diego being the more popular destination with more than 1 million people vs. Los Angeles' population of over 10 million.
Despite their small market size, the Chargers have always had competitive teams. They've had five different coaches lead them over the past three decades and have won at least eight games six times. Their highest ranking under Bill Polian was #6 in 2004, when they went 11-5 before losing to New England in the first round.

Tampa Bay was founded in 1765 by Spanish colonists who named it after their king, Carlos III. They originally called it St. Petersburg because it was believed that the area would be spared from hurricanes if Jesus Christ were made king. Tampa Bay defeated Chicago, 42-28, in what was then the largest crowd ever to attend a Super Bowl game.
In 2008, Tampa Bay hosted the NFC Championship Game between the Eagles and Giants. The Giants beat Philadelphia, 28-24, to go to their second consecutive Super Bowl. In 2017, the Buccaneers played in their first Super Bowl with Dirk Koetter at the helm. They lost to Donald Trump's favorite team, the New York Giants, 27-10.
