Sunday Night Football is an annual American football television series between the New York Giants and New Jersey Jets at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The match-up was established in 1970 as part of the NFL's expansion plan that year, with the first game being played at Shea Stadium in Queens. The game has been played each year on Sunday nights since then, except for three years when it was played on Monday nights (1977–79).
The Giants won the first four games before the Jets took over as top team with five consecutive victories. The two teams have met annually since 1990 with the exception of 1994 when the Jets were replaced by the Buffalo Bills due to a players' strike that year. New York has a dominant 24-10-1 record against New Jersey at MetLife Stadium.
MetLife Stadium is the home stadium of the New York Giants and New Jersey Jets. It is located in East Rutherford, New Jersey, about 20 miles north of Manhattan City. The stadium is approximately 30 minutes from New York City by car.

The NFL announced last week that it will not have any regular-season games this year or next because of the coronavirus pandemic. However, ESPN will still cover several major sports events this year including the NBA Finals, MLB World Series, and the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship.
Additionally, "Sunday Night Football" games will be shown on ABC instead of NBC this season due to the COVID-19 outbreak requiring more caution by the network not to transmit community acquired infections. This means that all Sunday night football games will be played on ABC rather than NBC this year.
Finally, any "Thursday Night Football" games that are played this year will also be shown on ABC rather than NBC due to same reasons as above. All Thursday night football games were expected to be shown on NBC this year.
NBC did not announce what day or time period these "Wednesday Night Football" games would have been scheduled for this season.

ESPN is apparently negotiating a stronger TV rights agreement with the NFL in order to negotiate more games in the future, but the network's lone package of NFL games in 2020 includes the whole slate of Monday night games. In 2020, the network's main ESPN channel will air all "Monday Night Football" games. Other ESPN channels may carry some games.
In addition to Monday night games, ESPN has the contract to televise four regular season NFL games each year, including two on Sunday afternoons and two late nights on Monday or Tuesday nights. The other two games are played on Thursday nights during the first half of the season. These games are usually between teams that didn't play on Monday night and often include an early start time (either noon or 1 p.m. Eastern Time).
The contract between ESPN and the NFL expires after the 2019 season. If no new deal is reached by March 15, it would be the first time since 2002 that no network had the MNF television rights. At that point, NBC would become the default partner if the NFL doesn't want to pay more for its product; however, if NBC decides not to pick up the game, then CBS could step in as a replacement.
ESPN paid $1 billion over 10 years to broadcast NFL games from 2007-16. By comparison, Fox Sports paid $485 million over 7 years to show NFL games during that period.

Every week of the season, there are Sunday night games planned, and that now includes Week 17, when this game was flexed into the SNF window. The only change for the Week 17 game is it will be played on December 30 instead of December 1.
