The Miss America pageant is an annual American television show that airs live on NBC on Thursday nights during the summer months. Hosted by actress Nicole Scherzinger, it is based on the original model developed by Gene Autry in 1937 which was called the Miss America contest. The current titleholder is Miss Washington Eliza Rose Brown. She won the award on September 9, 2016.
Mississippi has had many winners over the years.
The Miss Georgia USA competition determines the state of Georgia's representative in the Miss USA pageant. Greenwood Productions, owned by Miss Tennessee USA 1989, Kim Greenwood, directs this pageant, which is held in McDonough, Georgia. The current reigning titleholder is Miss America 2020.
The first Miss Georgia USA was crowned on January 24, 1949. She won the award again four years later. In 1953, the pageant was not held due to financial problems. It was not held again until it was revived in 1960. Since then, it has been held annually except for 1972 and 2001.
There are no restrictions on who can compete as Miss Georgia USA. Any female over the age of 18 can enter the contest. However, the winner must be a citizen of the United States and be able to represent her country on stage if necessary. The second requirement is that she cannot have won another state title since becoming Miss Georgia USA. For example, if a woman were to win both the Miss Georgia USA and Miss Southern Belles titles in the same year, she would be unable to hold both crowns at the same time.
In addition to being named Miss Georgia USA, winners have received $100 and a contract with an advertising company. The purpose of this contract is to promote the winner's state and hometown. In recent years, contestants have received additional prizes such as a car or cash award.
