The Miss USA winner advances to compete in the Miss Universe contest. There is no swimsuit competition at the Miss America pageant, but there is a talent competition. In addition, the Miss USA titleholder receives a $50,000 scholarship while the Miss America winner receives a $15,000 scholarship.
Miss USA was founded by Donald J. Young in 1952. He also served as president of the Miss Universe Organization until his death in 2003. Since then, his wife, Terry, has continued to run the organization. The couple's daughter, Cathy Lee Jones, serves as CEO.
In September 2011, it was announced that Miss USA would no longer be able to compete in the Miss Universe country. Instead, her spot will be given to another state delegate who will have their own chance to win the crown. However, they can still participate in the Miss America competition.
States may choose to use their discretion on which phase of the competition they wish to enter. For example, if a state decides to send a contestant to Miss America instead of Miss Universe, then she cannot win either title.
Every year, the Miss USA pageant selects a "special award" to give out as part of its pageant awards system. These include Best State Costume, Best Talent, and others.
Many ladies compete in both Miss USA and Miss America, although the two organizations are entirely different. Miss USA, like Miss America, has severe admission criteria, and the program includes a swimsuit element of the competition. However, unlike Miss America, applicants do not compete against each other during preliminary competitions; instead, they are divided into state groups to determine who will go on to the next round. The final placement from each state group determines how many contestants move on to the next round. For example, if an applicant wins her state title and is also one of the top 15 finalists, she would receive a full scholarship to participate in the Miss America pageant.
Miss America is held annually in Atlantic City, New Jersey, with the winner going on to compete in the Miss Universe and Miss World pageants. Miss USA is held in late January in Las Vegas. Applicants can only be between the ages of 20 and 28 at the time of their appearance before the judges. In addition, they must meet certain requirements to compete in the contest. For example, they must be citizens of the United States and residents of the state where the contest is being held. They must also have a high school diploma or its equivalent and pass a medical examination. Finally, they must be willing to travel and spend several thousand dollars out-of-pocket costs for expenses such as transportation, hotel rooms, and food while in Atlantic City.
Since 1952, the Miss USA pageant has been conducted yearly to choose the United States' representative for the Miss Universe competition. Eight Miss USA winners have gone on to become Miss Universe, and their names are highlighted in bold. The most recent winner was Laura Kae Lee from Massachusetts, who won on July 28, 2019.
In addition to the title of Miss Universe, other significant awards included first place prizes of $50,000 donated by DuPont and G.E. Inc. In 1953, the second place prize increased to $25,000; third place received a premium ticket price of $5. Second and third places now receive cash awards of $10,000 and 5% of the franchise fee, respectively.
The original judges were renowned artists and architects such as Henry Hering, Charles McKim, and Eliel Saarinen. Today's judges are selected by a committee of representatives from the modeling industry.
There have been 31 states and territories represented in the contest. California has the most victories with six, followed by Texas with five. Florida, Illinois, and New York have each won four times.
California's six wins are also highest among states that have never won the crown.
Miss America is a beauty competition that dates back to 1921. It began as a bathing suit competition to entice tourists to Atlantic City, New Jersey. It has developed into a massive organization that grants scholarships to women and promotes female empowerment in the almost 100 years since. The current titleholder is Olivia Jordan of North Carolina.
In 1917, Mrs. William D. Porterfield, president of the Miss America Pageant Company, saw how popular the pageant had become with tourists and decided to make it part of the city's entertainment scene for residents too. She hired artist Charles Russell to design the winner's trophy and gave it a face similar to that of the goddess Athena. Mrs. Porterfield also asked him to paint six other trophies for other categories - including one for the national champion - who would then receive cash prizes.
The first season only had two events: a swimsuit competition and interview. In 1922, the talent portion was added. From then on, the show has remained consistent with these three elements. In 1969, after many complaints from viewers that the show was focusing too much on fashion and less on scholarship, Mayor Richard J. Hughes ordered a change. From then on, the winner of the contest would receive a real college diploma rather than just a trophy.
Since then, the show has continued to evolve. In 1996, they changed the format to one night only with a live broadcast from Atlantic City.
Those unfamiliar with the pageant industry can confuse Miss USA and Miss America. They aren't; they're independent pageants with distinct differences such as contestant age ranges and regions of competition. Miss America is held in late September while Miss USA takes place in early June. In addition, Miss America requires that contestants have a photo ID to be eligible for the title while Miss USA does not.
Both events are organized by the Miss Universe Organization but no connection exists between the two events other than both giving female applicants from around the world the opportunity to compete against each other for national titles. Miss USA has been held since 1956 while Miss Universe began in 1952. During its first year, Miss America accepted women aged 21 to 28 while today's version focuses on the age group of 19 to 26. Also, unlike Miss USA, Miss America requires its winners to be citizens of the United States of America.

In addition to her work with "What Not to Wear," she has appeared several times on "The Maury Povich Show" helping people who are having wardrobe problems of their own. She has also made cameo appearances in two episodes of NBC's hit series "Saturday Night Live": once playing a reporter interviewing President Reagan for a story on breast implants (which he refused), and again playing an interviewer asking Madonna if she was pregnant (Madonna denied it).
She also had a role as herself in the 2002 comedy film "Miss Congeniality".
Marla was born in New York City but raised in South Carolina after her family moved when she was a child. She says that she decided to become a dentist because she likes helping people and enjoys improving their smiles. She competed in the 1986 Miss America pageant but did not place. After the pageant she went back home to South Carolina and then eventually moved to Columbia to study at the University of South Carolina School of Dentistry.
She is now married to a police officer and they have one son together. In addition to English, she speaks French too.
