The Twins are a Major League Baseball (MLB) team that plays in the American League (AL) Central division. They have played home games at Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome since 1982.
The franchise was founded as the Kansas City Indians in 1948 by the then-owners of the Kansas City Athletics who moved their team to Minnesota after being purchased by a group including former A's player and manager Charlie Finley. The new team was named after its principal owner, Mr. William Kenyon "Billy" Martin Jr., who had no prior experience with baseball or any other sport for that matter. Martin's father had a successful business selling cars, which made Billy an extremely wealthy man.
In its first season, the Indians finished last in the AL with a 65-97 record. However, they did manage to win the pennant in their second season with the help of future Hall of Famer Bob Lemon. The team lost the World Series that year to the New York Yankees in seven games.
The franchise has been very successful ever since, winning more than 400 games every year except for 1974 when they finished second. The Twins have also appeared in the postseason ten times, most recently coming away with a one game victory over the Houston Astros in 2017.

In 2001, the team earned its first World Series title with Terry Ryan at the helm. He was later fired after finishing second the next two seasons. Jim Pohlson took over as manager in 2005 and led the team to its first World Series appearance in six years. He was replaced by Ron Gardenhire after the 2008 season when he finished with a 416-460 record. In 2012, Gardenhire led the Twins to their first World Series victory in five years over San Francisco in seven games.

The original Minneapolis Millers played in the Association and National Leagues from 1871 until 1890 when they moved to New York City. A new Minneapolis team was established in 1991 and has been a member of the AL since its formation in 1969. The Twins have won two World Series titles - in 1987 and 1995 - and have appeared in nine World Series games.
Minneapolis/St. Paul is a twin-city region in the U.S. state of Minnesota separated by the Mississippi River. It is the largest city in the state not located on an island. The population was 968,000 according to the 2010 United States Census, making it the second most populous metropolitan area in Minnesota after Minneapolis.
