When was the last time Spain won the Euros? As previously said, Spain dominated international football not long ago, winning three major tournaments in a row from 2008 to 2012 and being heavily favored for a few years either side of that. Two of them victories were in the European Championship, and their most recent win came at Euro 2012 in Poland and Ukraine.
They will be hoping to continue that run this year, when they open the tournament against Italy on June 12th in Warsaw.
Spain has never been relegated from the European Championship - they have always managed to finish within the top two places and qualify for the final stage. However, they have never been able to defend their title because they haven't been able to win it yet.
Their closest call was in 2004, when they lost out to France in the final matchday after conceding a goal late in the game to Greece. In 2008, they defeated Germany 4-2 after extra time before losing out to Italy in a penalty shootout. In 2012, they beat England 2-0 at the end of regulation time but then lost out to UEFA's favorite team, France, in the final match.
So, Spain has been close several times but never quite got over the line. However, with new players coming into the team under new manager Julen Lopetegui, there's no reason why they shouldn't be able to break their duck this time around.
Spain has won three times (1964, 2008, 2012), as has Germany (1972, 1980, 1996), France (1984, 2000), and Italy (1968), followed by Czechoslovakia (1976), the Netherlands (1988), Denmark (1992), and Greece (2004). Football has long been recognized as a uniting force and an event on a global scale. The European Championship is regarded as the most prestigious international football tournament and since its inception in 1956 it has been won by all European countries that have participated.
The European Championship is played every four years and consists of two parts: a group stage and a final round. In the group stage, which starts in late June/early July and ends after seven weeks, each team will play against all others once. The top two teams from each group advance to the knockout stage called the "round of 16". Here, they are joined by the best third-placed team from each group and are split into two groups of four. They play each other once and the two winners proceed to the quarter-finals. The remaining four places at the semi-final stage are determined by two separate games - the "play-offs". These take place in November and December and include the three remaining groups as well as a new fourth group containing the four lowest-ranked teams at the end of the group stage.
Since 2008, the European Championship has been held in various cities within Europe. Countries that have taken part in the previous tournaments are indicated in brackets.
