Unless you add the well-known UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2006, Newcastle United's last "big" victory was the FA Cup in 1955, when they defeated Manchester City 3-1. They have also won the League Cup twice, in 1979 and 1990.
Newcastle United was founded in 1892 by the English football club Newcastle United F.C.. The two clubs are not related except for their shared ownership by an Indian company. New India Ltd acquired a 49 percent stake in 1995, which is now owned by an Indian family. The club played its home games at St James' Park until 1899, when they moved into a new stadium called Athletic Grounds. The record attendance for a match at St James' Park is approximately 20,000 people. This was set on May 24, 1896, when Newcastle played Liverpool in the first game of the 1896-97 season. Liverpool won that match 2-0.
After World War II, Newcastle United became one of the most successful teams in England, winning the First Division title in 1951-52 and the FA Cup in 1955. However, financial problems caused by overspending by the owner led to him being forced to sell his shares in the club in 2005. The owner at this time was Freddy Shepherd, who had bought the shares from Sir John Hall.
Six FA Cups. Newcastle United have won four league crowns, six FA Cups, and a Charity Shield, as well as the 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup and the 2006 UEFA Intertoto Cup, making them the sixth most successful English club. They are also one of only three clubs to have won the European Cup/Champions League with two different countries (England & Scotland).
Newcastle United were founded on 1st October 1883 by the merger of two local football clubs, St James's Church FC (founded 1876) and North Eastern FC (founded 1879). The new club began playing home matches at Peacock Park, now called St James's Park, which was then under construction. The first game was a 2–2 draw with Huddersfield Town on 15th February 1884.
Peacock Park had an initial capacity of 10,000, but this was reduced to 7,500 for the start of the 1911–12 season when a new stand was built behind the goal. This stand was named after its designer, George Borrow, who went on to become one of the best-known novelists of his day. He is now better known for his work on Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection published in 1839. The match against Everton on 5th March 1912 was the first game to be played at St James's Park.
Between 1904 and 1910, the club had its most successful phase, winning the FA Cup and three of its four league titles. Since then, they have never been able to replicate this success.
They first entered the FA Cup in 1879, but it was not until 1905 that they became a force to be reckoned with, winning the competition four times in five seasons from 1905 to 1909. However, they failed to win any more titles after 1909 and have only reached the final four times since then. In 1964, they returned to the final for which they were originally built when they beat Manchester United 1-0 at Wembley Stadium with a goal from Jackie Stamps. But they could not repeat this success as they lost 3-2 to Liverpool.
Newcastle's latest run in the FA Cup came in 2015 when they defeated Premier League side Norwich City 2-1 at Carrow Road to reach the quarter-finals for the first time in eight years. Here, they met Wigan Athletic, who were playing in their first ever FA Cup match. The game ended 0-0 after 90 minutes with both teams going into extra time. It was here that Newcastle scored their only goal of the evening to progress to the last 4 for the second year running.
They are also the fourth oldest football club in England.
Newcastle first entered the inaugural season of the Premier League in 1995. They were immediately relegated due to financial problems at the club. However, they were re-instated into the top flight at the end of the season after Wolverhampton Wanderers and Blackburn Rovers failed drug tests. They finished ninth that year, but has never been relegated again. In 2001–02, they finished second behind Arsenal, which was their best finish until 2014–15 when they qualified for the UEFA Champions League for the first time in their history. They were eliminated by Juventus in the quarterfinals.
Up until 2015–16, they had never won any silverware other than the above titles. That season, they finally broke this drought by winning the Championship title thanks to a last-day victory over Brighton & Hove Albion. They then went on to win the League Cup against Liverpool and the FA Cup against Watford. This makes them the first club from Newcastle upon Tyne to win the FA Cup.
One of the three domestic or three European prizes is a significant trophy: the League Championship (also known as the Premiership, Premier League) and the FA Cup. The League Cup (also called the Milk Cup, Littlewoods Cup, Rumbalows Cup, Coca-Cola Cup, Worthington Cup, and Carling Cup) is an annual knockout competition open to all English football clubs. It is played between September and January, which is when there are few other important competitions taking place in Europe. Its current name was given by Carling Brewery in recognition of their sponsorship which began in 2003.
The Europa League is an annual club tournament founded by UEFA that involves the top clubs from Europe's top two professional leagues: the English Football League (EFL) and La Liga. The final of the tournament is called the Champions League final. The third league title winner will also qualify if they finish above Liverpool in the EPL. If Chelsea win the FA Cup, then Liverpool will automatically qualify for next year's Champions League because it is a priority season for Chelsea with the new stadium being built.
Finally, the Intertoto Cup is a tournament for second-tier European clubs. It is not considered to be part of any particular season's league schedule and so does not affect anyone's title aspirations. However, most winners enter into the following year's UEFA Cup.
Overall, the Carling Cup is one of the three major trophies in England. It is won by winning the competition.
Newcastle made their first and only participation in the Cup Winners' Cup in 1998-99. The UEFA Intertoto Cup was their sole recognized UEFA title, according to UEFA archives. They have spent a total of 16 seasons in European football as of the 2017-2018 season.
Newcastle United was founded on 1st August 1869 by William Barclay and Henry Blount as a football club based in Newcastle upon Tyne. The club originally played its games on local public grounds but after one season had to move out of town because no official permission could be obtained to play on private property. In 1876, they entered the FA Cup for the first time but were defeated 4-1 by Oxford University at the North Meadow of Magdalen College. After this initial success, they became largely unsuccessful until 1896 when they finally won the Cup by defeating Gainsborough Trinity 8-0 in the final. This remains their only major honour.
Since then, they have been continuously involved in European competition and currently hold licenses for four teams (under-23, under-18, under-17, and under-15) in addition to a women's team. These teams would take part in the UEFA Youth League.
Newcastle has been relegated from all domestic leagues except the Football Conference three times (2000-01, 2010-11, and 2011-12).
