The side with the most goals at the conclusion of 70 minutes will be declared the winner. If both teams have the same score, the game is declared a draw. A hockey team consists of 11 players plus six replacements. Every player on the field must use a hockey stick. Players may only hit the ball with one side of their stick. There are two balls used in the game: the pucks and the skates.
In 1872, an official rule was established for how long games could last. They could not exceed 75 minutes without stopping to change ends, so that rule is still used today. The first game recorded as lasting more than 60 minutes was played between Montreal Hockey Club and Ottawa University on January 19, 1875. The game ended in a 2-2 tie - the first ever hockey match to end in a tie. In 1879, another rule was introduced to prevent players from changing sides after the start of the second period - the first time such a restriction was put in place. Before then, coaches would switch ends to bring in new talent or replace players who were getting tired.
In 1906, the National Hockey Association (NHA) was formed by former members of the Montreal Victorias who wanted to play a higher quality of hockey. They brought some of the rules of soccer (the sports popular at the time among English-speaking Canadians) into the game - such as having a goalkeeper. Over the next few years, many of the original NHA players moved on and others joined them.
The Goal of the Game The purpose of hockey is to use a stick to strike a ball into a goal. A point is granted to the team whose ball enters the goal. The winning team is the one with the most goals at the end of the game. A tie is declared when both sides score the same amount of goals. In this case, each team gets one point for the tie.
There are several ways that a game can be decided: by penalty shots, by overtime, by a shootout.
In penalty shots, each team takes five shots from the free-positioning circle (or penalti) in order to score as many points as they can before the other team scores a goal. The player who scores the most points wins the match.
In overtime, if the game remains tied at the end of normal playing time, then extra periods of play will be used to determine a winner. These extra periods are called overtimes. If the game still isn't settled after two 15-minute periods, then three 10-minute periods are played. And so on, until a winner is determined.
In shootouts, each player in turn has a chance to score a goal by shooting at a goalmouth marked with a pad. The first player to score wins the match. If the match remains tied at the end of the shoot-out, then additional rounds are held until there is a winner.
Ice hockey, or "hockey," is a team sport played on a specially prepared ice rink surface. Each team's goal is to send the puck (a vulcanized rubber disk) and score into the opposing goal. The game is divided into three 20-minute periods, with the clock starting only while the puck is in play. The basis for the game has changed very little since it first began. The puck is still in use today, and so are the rules that govern how it should be handled. A player may handle the ball only once per shift; any further touches result in a penalty shot for the opposing team. Other than that, the rules are pretty much the same as they were back then.
In Canada, France, Russia, and the United States, ice hockey is popular among adults. In Europe, ice hockey is popular among children and teenagers. The IIHF publishes statistics on ice hockey worldwide, including comparisons of sports fans' attitudes toward professional hockey. According to these surveys, many more people attend hockey games than football matches.

If the score is still tied after 60 minutes, the game goes into a five-minute, sudden-death overtime in which the first goal wins. Otherwise, the game ends immediately with a tie.
