The first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens, Greece, in 1896. The 1904 event was canceled due to a military uprising against the Russian rule of Greece. The 2008 Summer Olympics were postponed from August 8 to October 9, 2008, and then again until February 10, 2009, when they were finally held in Beijing because of political tensions with Japan over the ownership of islands near China’s coast. The 2012 Summer Olympics were also held in London because Iraq refused to allow American troops to use its airports as staging posts for military operations in Afghanistan. The 2016 Summer Olympics were held in Rio de Janeiro because of protests related to government corruption and violence at the time of the bidding process for the games. These are the only World Championships that have ever been canceled; all other events have gone ahead as planned or been rescheduled.
In 2002, terrorist attacks during the Olympics in Salt Lake City caused the games to be canceled. In 1980, the Iranian hostage crisis brought the Olympics to a close early; neither the Olympics nor the Games of 1978 took place due to political conflicts between Iran and the United States.
The Olympics have been rescheduled for the first time in peacetime for the 2020 Games. The Games had previously been canceled due to global wars in 1916, 1940, and 1944.

The Olympic Games have only been cancelled three times (or five times if the Winter Olympics are counted separately) and postponed once in the past (in 2020). All of the cancellations were caused by global wars. The third cancellation also led to the first Summer Olympics without a summer season since 1896.
In 776 BC, during the Bronze Age, the Ancient Greeks decided to call off all sports because the army was needed to fight invading Turks. In 1952, the 1948 War ended, but the United States government didn’t want to risk losing its star athletes so they canceled all other activities too. In 2020, a war broke out between China and Taiwan, causing both countries to withdraw from many events including the Olympics.
The 1944 summer Olympics were intended to be held in London, but they were abruptly canceled owing to the continuing war. The same may be said about the 1944 winter games in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy. The 1948 Olympics were finally held in London, although German and Japanese competitors were barred from competing.

Only three modern Olympic Games have been canceled. Due to World War I and World War II, they were canceled in 1916, 1940, and 1944, respectively.
The Games were then slated to take place between July 20 and August 4, 1940. Following the onset of World War II (particularly the Winter War), the Olympic Games were discontinued permanently and did not return until the 1948 London Games.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) does not take such a decision lightly. Even when the Olympic Committee decided to stagger the games so that the Winter and Summer Olympics did not take place in the same year, but at two-year intervals, the coveted competition was not skipped.

Warfare was briefly halted in ancient times to allow for the game to take place. However, in contemporary times, the Olympic Games were not hosted in 1916, 1940, or 1944. The 1936 games were cancelled due to a boycott by most countries because of Germany’s annexation of Austria and Nazi “racial hygiene” policies. In 1952, the only modern-day non-host is the city of Los Angeles, which declined to host the 1984 games because of cost concerns.
The next games will be held in 2020 in Tokyo, Japan.
During World War I and World War II, the Olympic Games were canceled. The 1940 Summer Games, originally set for Tokyo, were postponed owing to the war and relocated to Helsinki, Finland, where they were subsequently canceled entirely. Another attempt was made at a resumption of the games in 1948, but it too was unsuccessful; no Olympics have been held since then.
The Olympic Movement did not give up hope that another tournament would be organized and successfully completed. In 1951, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced that new plans were under consideration for the summer games of 1952. However, due to political tensions between Europe and the United States, these plans were dropped. No subsequent attempts have been successful so far.
In September 2009, the IOC announced that it had decided to cancel the 2012 London Olympics because of concerns about security following the July 7 bombings. The last day of competition was scheduled for August 12. This was the first time that the Olympics had been cancelled since 1920.
The decision was made by the IOC’s Executive Board and was said to be based on concerns about security after the July attacks. The board felt that holding the games would put people’s safety at risk. The executive board also voted to change the dates of the 2016 games from late summer to early spring (March 3-14).
