A match in indoor volleyball consists of five sets, or games. The set is won by the first team to score 25 points. The match is decided in three sets, and the fifth tiebreaker set, if required, is only played to 15 points. Every game, teams switch sides. A new game begins with both teams changing ends for each endzone.
Indoor volleyball uses a net that hangs from the ceiling to contain the ball while it's being played. There are two types of nets: backboard-and-net and open-wire. In backboard-and-net venues, the net is made of glass or plastic coated with tape to prevent balls from bouncing off it. This type of venue is commonly used by college programs. Open-wire venues have a net that does not reach as high as the wall-to-wall cushions that surround the court; thus they can be used by schools with limited budgets or those who want to keep costs down by not having to pay extra for a backboard. The ball has a leather cover on it that is about 1 inch in diameter.
There are four main rules in indoor volleyball. They are: hit underhand, hit overhand, stay on your side of the court, and don't touch the net.
In order to score points, players must shoot the ball into the opposing team's end zone or goal area.
Volleyball matches are made up of sets, which are usually three or five in length. Three-set matches consist of two sets of 25 points each, followed by a third set of 15 points. Each set must be won by a margin of two points. The match is won by the first team to win two sets. If they are still tied after five sets, then the match goes into a fifth and final set.
Each point in volleyball is worth one swing for a player. A player gets one chance per point to hit the ball. If the ball is not touched within one minute, then the opposing team gets another chance. In between swings, a player can run up to the net to block shots from the fielders or shoot herself.
There are three types of shots in volleyball: spikes, serves, and blocks. Spikes are when the player hits the ball with her feet directly over the net. They are most useful for stopping the ball on its way into the net. Spikes are compulsory; if a player does not spike the ball, then it is out.
A serve is when the player throws the ball up into the air above the net and it lands inside the service box. The server gets to choose where to send the ball and can change their mind at any time. There are different types of serves: push, overhead, and block serves. With a push serve, the player uses both hands to toss the ball up high into the air.
Volleyball matches can be played as a single game or as a best of three or best of five set competition. In terms of scoring, volleyball can be played to 15, 25, 30, or any number of points. A match must be completed within a time limit; if it is not finished before then, the referee will announce that time has been exhausted and the team with the most points at the end of play wins.
In practice, games in volleyball are usually won by one of the teams getting more attacks than their opponents. If they are equal in attacks, then the team who gets more blocks will win. If there is still an attack difference, then the team who gets the next attack will win. It is very difficult for a team to win a game without hitting the ball; therefore, attacking is the most important thing in volleyball. The team that attacks the most wins most of the time.
The score limit determines how many points a team can earn in a game. A game can be decided in several ways when the score is equal: most attacks wins, best server wins, etc. The limit keeps both teams from running up scores that could never be beaten. For example, if a game was tied 9-9 after two sets, it would be impossible for either team to win because they would need to get at least 13 points in each of the last two sets to do so.
Volleyball matches are played to a best-of-five set format. Beach volleyball matches are best of three sets, with the rally point system used. The first two sets are played to a total of 21 points, while the third set is played to a total of 15 points. A team must once again win a set by two points. If they lose by two points or more, the match is over at that stage.
In order for a player to be awarded a hit during a point, he or she must touch the ball with at least one foot (including the toe of the shoe). If the player uses both feet, it is called a double hit and results in a free ball for the opposing team. If a player uses only one foot, it is called an illegal move and the server will face a penalty shot if he or she is not replaced.
A serve is any attempt by a player to send the ball into play against his or her opponent. On a beach volleyball court, a player can either serve or receive the ball. Both players are required to remain behind the service line during a point in order to keep the ball in play. A player can also hit the ball out of bounds to end the point.
The term "set" refers to the last point won by a team before they change sides. Each side has two opportunities to score during each set, resulting in four total points scored by each team in a game.
Say it aloud: "Pause." If they are still tied after five sets, then the match ends with a tie.
In five-set matches, each team will receive one opportunity for victory by one point. If the score is tied at the end of five sets, then a sixth set is played immediately following the fifth. All rules regarding time limits and penalties apply to the sixth set as well.
The game begins with players from both teams arriving on the court together. There are six players per team allowed outside the perimeter line during play. These players are called attackers because they go after the ball while defenders try to stop them. Both sides have a serve where one player gets a point if the ball hits the ground inside the service box.
Each team has eight players on the floor during play: four attackers and four defenders. An attacker who is not part of the hit squad can be used to block shots or catch passes. A defender can also be used to pass to an open teammate. If a player is out of position when the ball is served, the server can choose to let it bounce once before hitting it again.
