The ball is still in play in the above graphic since it has not completely passed the touch line. The ball is now deemed out of play in the graphic above since it has completely passed the touch line. If a player picks up the ball after it has gone out of play, then this is called a free kick.
The referee will usually call for the ball to be put back into play by having a member of the team who was responsible for taking control of it throw it towards where they are standing (usually just outside their own penalty area). This is called putting the ball back into play.
There are two ways that the opposing team can score when the ball is out of play: through a direct free kick and also by scoring via a corner. A direct free kick is given to the opposing team from where they had possession of the ball immediately before it went out of play. The only people allowed inside the penalty area while the ball is out of play are the players holding the free kicks. No other players are allowed in the box during a free kick period.
A corner is a way for the opposition to score when they don't have the ball.
When the ball is out of play, a throw in is granted to the team that last touched it. This is taken at the point that the ball was no longer in play. To be considered out of play, the ball must make contact with the ground or a player positioned outside the court's boundaries. If the ball hits any part of the playing surface inside the court's boundaries, it is inbounded by the opposing team.
The in-game referee has the ability to award a free throw to either team if he/she feels it is necessary due to circumstances beyond their control. For example, if a player is injured and cannot continue, or if there is some other reason why they should not have to shoot from the free-throw line, then they can request that the opponent take their place.
In the NBA, if the ball goes out of play while the clock is running, two options are available to both teams. The referees can choose to suspend play and allow either team to replace the ball before continuing with the game. Or they can declare the ball dead and give each team one free throw. In this case, the fouled team would get the opportunity to shoot the free throws before the end of time-out.
In the NCAA, if the ball goes out of play while the clock is running, the same options exist for both teams.
If a member of team "A" knocks the ball out of bounds beyond the touch lines (sidelines), a member of team "B" receives the ball. A throw in at the point where the ball went out returns the ball to play. Team "A" has another chance to score.
There are two ways that teams resume play after the ball goes out of bounds: a free kick and a penalty kick. The referee may choose one of these options depending on where the ball went out of bounds.
If the ball goes out of bounds in midfield, the team with the ball can choose either to take a free kick or try for goal under the opposing team's defense. If they choose the free kick option, the team loses the opportunity to shoot but keeps the ball where it fell. They will get another chance to shoot once the ball is kicked off again.
If the team with the ball chooses the goal-scoring option, they will be awarded with a penalty kick. This means that they will get only one chance to score instead of having time to run up field and use their creativity to find open teammates. However, since it is their own player who went out of bounds, they have the option of taking the kick themselves or allowing the opponent to take it. If they choose the self-shot option, the referee will call for a retake of the penalty kick.
The accompanying diagram shows that there is a narrow line for evaluating whether a ball is "in" or "out." If you can see the ball 'out' (a space between the ball and the line), it's 'out.' If you don't see a space and are unsure whether the ball is in or out, call it 'in.' This is known as the out-of-sight rule. If the ball is out of sight, then it's considered out even if it seems like it might be in based on how close it comes to the line when the batter takes his swing.

(iv) A ball is not out of bounds if it strikes any portion of the goalpost and bounces back into play. This new regulation implies that if someone is already off the court and receives the ball before it grounds, it will now be a throw in to the other team. Previously, if a player was off the court when the ball went into the stands or onto the roof of the building next to it, that would have been considered a dead ball and the player would have had a chance to return the ball into play.
The rule change was made in order to reduce scoring opportunities as much as possible during stoppages in play. Since almost every shot goes in, this makes sense.
There are two ways for a ball to reach the goal from outside the area between the posts. It can be passed into the goal by an attacker who is running with the ball or it can be thrown in by a teammate. Before the rule change, if a player was off the court when the ball went into the stands or onto the roof of the building next to it, they would have a chance to return the ball into play. The goalies will simply pick up where they left off.
A free kick is taken by the defending team on the edge of their own penalty box.
