On the northern edge of campus, on S.W. Second Avenue, are the Mark Bostick Golf Course and Scott Linder Stadium for tennis. The University Sports Association, Inc. (UAA), a private, non-profit company that reports to the president of the university and its board of trustees, oversees the Florida Gators athletic program. The company manages all non-revenue sports at the university including golf, tennis, and volleyball.
The men’s and women’s tennis teams practice and play home matches in the Tennis Complex, which is located near the intersection of SW Second Street and Boynton Beach Boulevard in downtown Fort Lauderdale. The complex was built in 1998 and has been named after long-time head coach George Mason who retired in 1996 after 36 years at the helm of the team.
In addition to coaching men’s and women’s tennis, George Mason also served as an assistant football coach for the Gators from 1970-71. He resigned from this position to take over as head coach of the men’s tennis team. He remained at the helm of the tennis team for six seasons before moving on to other pursuits. As part of its commitment to provide opportunities for student-athletes to develop their leadership skills, the Gators have invited Mason back to help lead workshops for both the men’s and women’s tennis teams.
