Australia, England, and New Zealand dominate international rugby league. It is the national sport of Papua New Guinea and New Zealand. Other South Pacific and European nations compete in the Pacific Cup and European Cup, respectively.
In addition to these countries, France, Italy, and Spain all have domestic rugby leagues. Ireland also has a domestic league but it is not officially sanctioned by World Rugby. The island nation is part of the Six Nations group of countries who play each other annually at different times. In addition to these countries, Africa also has a domestic league. But it is not widely supported across the continent.
England, Australia, and New Zealand have won every men's Rugby World Cup except one (France in 2007).
The first World Cup was held in 1975 in France and the last one was in 2015 in England. There will be a second World Cup in 2019 or 2021 in either Japan or Canada. If Japan is selected, then they will host the tournament for the first time ever.
It is the most popular sport in the world with estimates ranging from 3 to 5 million people playing worldwide. It is more popular in Europe than baseball or American football.
There are two versions of rugby: 15-a-side and 7-a-side.
The sport is predominantly popular in the British Isles, France, Australia, Southern Africa, Argentina, and, to a lesser extent, Italy, Uruguay, the United States, Canada, and Japan, with its popularity growing throughout the British Empire's expansion and through French supporters (Rugby Europe) in Europe. In addition to these countries, rugby football is also widely played in New Zealand, South Africa, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, and Tonga.
In terms of international competitions, the six major European nations (England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, France, and Switzerland) along with Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa compete for the Larry Ellis Cup. The World Cup is the only officially recognized international tournament that all eyes turn to each year as one of the most exciting tournaments in all of sports. The trophy for this competition is called the Webb Ellis Trophy and it is named after the man who originally proposed the idea of forming a national team to play against other countries. He also happened to be the father of rugby league so this is another example of how intertwined this game has become with other forms of football. The first World Cup was held in England in 1987 and since then has been won by either England or Great Britain depending on which nation performs best in any given year.
There are an estimated five million people playing rugby around the world, and over one hundred and fifty thousand players in the UK. That makes rugby the largest sporting activity in the country after football.
The New South Wales Suburban Rugby Union (NSWSU), which also includes an invitational side from Fiji, is the lower level of suburban rugby in Sydney and the world's largest centrally governed rugby tournament. The NSW Cup is the highest level of play. The NSWRU was founded in 1874 and became a legal entity in 1876.
The NSWRU has 24 teams divided into four divisions - Premier, Division 1, Division 2, and Division 3. Each team plays other members of their division twice during the season, once at home and once away. The top two teams from each division qualify for the finals series, which culminates with the grand final held at Allianz Stadium on the first Sunday of November. The winner of the cup is awarded the Phelan Shield.
There are several other large rugby union competitions in Australia, including the Queensland Cup, the Super Rugby competition based in New Zealand, and the National Rugby Championship based in Australia. There is also a women's league called the Women's Premiership. It started in 2016 and features eight teams. The top six ranked teams after the regular season advance to the playoffs while the bottom two teams go through a challenge process to retain their spots in the following year's competition.
In addition to these leagues, there is a second tier domestic competition known as the Intrust Super Premiership.
Rugby union is largely a private school sport in Australia. Here's your answer! Rugby league is the solution. Both rugby codes are virtually primarily played and followed in Queensland and New South Wales. The Australian national rugby union team, the Wallabies, have never won the World Cup but have been finalists on three occasions.
The national team is called the Wallabies because of the presence of many convicts during early colonial times. They play in white shirts and black shorts or skirts. The ball can be thrown or kicked at high speed by hand. Players use their arms and legs to tackle each other to stop the ball being used against them. There is no try score limit so a player who touches the ball downing it over the sideline is awarded a try. A penalty goal can also be taken when the opposition commits a serious foul play.
Australia has had great success at international rugby sevens. The country's men's and women's teams are among the favorites to win the upcoming Olympics games in Rio de Janeiro. At the last Olympic tournament in London, England, the Australians took home the silver medal for their efforts on the pitch.
Australia is also famous for its cricket team, which has won the Cricket World Cup once in 2000.
Rugby Union While Rugby League is significantly more popular in the north of England than Rugby Union, both codes are played extensively throughout Britain. In fact, if you add up the number of players in all British rugby clubs it comes to about 16,000. This means that there are almost 20,000 people playing rugby in the UK!
The most popular form of rugby in the United Kingdom is undoubtedly Rugby Union. It is believed to have been introduced into Britain by English students who were students at Cambridge University between 1845 and 1847. The students' name for the game was "association football" but they later changed this to "rugby". The first written reference to what we know today as rugby union was in a newspaper article from May 28th, 1867. The sport really took off after the arrival of the first professional rugby players in 1883. Today, almost every school in the country has a team and most villages have a club. There are also several large-scale national tournaments each year, such as the Premiership and the Guinness PRO14.
Rugby league was invented by one Arthur 'Artie' Ellis as a way for schools to play rugby outside of term time.
