In Washington, D.C., there is a Major League Baseball club and a Major League Baseball franchise. The Washington Nationals are a major league baseball club headquartered in Washington, D.C. The team plays in the National League's East Division.
The Nationals were established in Washington in 1961 when the Montreal Expos moved to Arlington, Virginia. The original Nationals played in Washington for two seasons before moving to New York City where they became the New York Mets. The original Nationals were one of eight teams that merged with other clubs to form the current MLB network. The others were the Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, Cincinnati Reds, Cleveland Indians, Detroit Tigers, Houston Astros, and Minnesota Twins.
The Nationals have only been in Washington since their first season. They played their home games at Griffith Stadium, which was also the home stadium of the NFL's Washington Redskins. In 1978, the Nationals moved into Capital Stadium, now known as Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium.
Capital Stadium had several problems including a poor location (which led to many lost games due to rainouts) and expensive maintenance costs. When Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium was built in 1973, it was intended to replace both Capital Stadium and what is now known as RFK Stadium (then named Anacostia Park).
National League East/Division Washington Nationals
The Washington Nationals are a major league baseball club headquartered in Washington, D.C. The Nationals are a Major League Baseball (MLB) team that plays in the National League (NL) East division.
Expos in Montreal The Washington Nationals are a National League baseball team headquartered in Washington, D.C. (NL). The Nationals, along with the Seattle Mariners, are one of two current major league clubs that have never competed in the World Series. They have won two NL East titles and have been finalists for three other times but have never won the championship.
They play their home games at Nationals Park which is a 25,539-seat stadium located in Downtown Washington. The Nationals opened the season on April 1, 2005 against the Houston Astros. In 2007, the Nationals were voted best team in all of baseball by both their fans and players.
Washington has hosted two All-Star Games: the National League's midseason classic at Washington's Griffith Stadium in 1933 and the American League's game at Capitol Hill Park in 1941. The Nationals have also made five post-season appearances, most recently in 2019. They have a 49-43 record when playing at home and a 56-37 record on the road.
The Expos played their first game on April 13, 2005, losing 4-3 to the Atlanta Braves. They only lasted two seasons before moving to Montreal where they became the Habs.
In 2008, the Nationals' owner, Ted Lerner, announced that he was giving up his stake in the team because he could no longer afford to pay for it.

After three seasons as the Baltimore Orioles' farm club, the Nationals entered the National League in 1891. The team was owned by the Montreal Baseball Club Ltd. from its founding in 1969 until July 2, 2004, when it was purchased by a group of Washington investors for $120 million.
A major league team had been founded in Washington before the Expos came along. The original Washington Senators moved to Minneapolis after the 1960 season and were replaced by the Minnesota Twins as the new American League city. The Twins moved to New York City after the 1995 season and were replaced by the New York Mets as the new National League city.
In addition to the Senators and the Twins, other major league teams have called Washington home at some point.
A single World Series The Washington Nationals are a National League baseball team headquartered in Washington, D.C. (NL). The Nationals have one World Series title and one National League pennant (both in 2019).
They are the second-youngest team in Major League Baseball (MLB) history behind the Chicago Cubs who became MLB's youngest franchise when they debuted on April 15, 1876 (the Nationals played their first game on October 12 of that year). The Nationals are also the first franchise to play all of its home games outside of Maryland or Virginia. Prior to the start of the 2018 season, the Nationals played all of their home games at Nationals Park which is located in Southwest Washington across from the District of Columbia Capitol. The team name and color scheme were announced on November 16, 2006. The Nationals are the only current major league team with an African American owner: Ted Lerner.
The Nationals are the third MLB team to be based in Washington, D.C. (the first being the Washington Senators from 1961 to 1972). They replaced the Montreal Expos who moved to Washington after the 2004 season to become the National Football League's Washington Redskins. The Nationals' inaugural season was 2009; prior to this, no other team had ever started a season with such late-October/early-November dates.
