The Boston Red Sox are a professional baseball club headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts. The Red Sox are a Major League Baseball (MLB) team that plays in the American League (AL) East division. The Red Sox's home field has been Fenway Park since 1912. The Red Sox were founded in 1901 as one of the American League's eight original organizations. They have won two World Series titles - 1917 and 2004 - and appeared in nine others.

Storrow, who owned the property where the stadium now stands. He wanted to build a stadium for the city's baseball team that would be different from other ballparks at the time and so he had a grass surface installed instead of dirt or concrete. This made Fenway Park the first major league stadium with natural grass playing surfaces.
Fenway Park opened on April 20th, 1912, with a game between the Red Sox and Cleveland Indians. More than 40,000 people came to see the Red Sox defeat Cleveland, 11-10 in 10 innings.

The Red Stockings went on to win the National Association's first season but lost all three games of the 1872 World Championship Series against the National League's New York Metropolitans. Afterward, the National Association disbanded, and the Red Stockings joined the newly formed American Association for the following season. The Red Stockings finished second in the Association's first season behind the Baltimore Orioles and also defeated them in three games of the World Series. However, the Orioles went on to win the next two seasons as well, so the Red Stockings did not win another title until 1903. They remained in the American League until 1916 when they moved to Cleveland.
The Red Sox are one of the most historic clubs in American sports, having won nine World Series victories and 14 American League (AL) pennants.
In addition to their National League (NL) rivals the New York Yankees, the Red Sox are considered by many to be the greatest franchise in MLB history. Their all-time winning percentage of.542 is the highest of any major league team that has not been awarded the title of "Champion".
The Red Sox have played their home games at Fenway Park since 1912. Built as a replacement for Boston's Public Garden ballpark, Fenway is the oldest major league stadium still in use. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 20, 1970.
Fenway has been the scene of many memorable moments in Red Sox history, including Carl Yastrzemski's dramatic home run in the last game of the 1970 World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Since then, no other player has hit more home runs than Yastrzemski during Game 7 of a World Series matchup.
The Red Sox organization has had several other successful teams throughout its history, with a majority of them playing in the AL East division against their NL counterparts.
