Paris has hosted the Summer Olympics before, in 1900 and precisely one century before its forthcoming games, in 1924. The French capital defeated several smaller European bids as well as its main rival, Los Angeles, to host the 2024 Olympics. The vote by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) was held on July 31, 2017.
Why do they call them the "Summer" Olympics? Because winter sports have their own event called the Winter Olympics. The summer Olympics are held every four years, in the fall or spring. The winter games are held every four years, in the spring or summer. But the IOC only sanctions annual games; therefore, there are also annual games known as the Olympics.

Only London has hosted the Summer Games three times: in 1908, 1948, and 2012. The Winter Olympics have been held in Switzerland five times (1924, 1936, 1940, 1944, and 1952), Germany two times (1968 and 1992), Canada one time (1950), and North America for the first time when Whistler, British Columbia, and Vancouver jointly hosted the 2010 Winter Games.
The IOC voted in 2017 to award the 2024 Olympics to Paris and the 2028 Olympics to Los Angeles. The decision was made after a vote by the members of the International Olympic Committee. Tokyo had previously been awarded both events but declined them due to cost concerns.
In September 2016, Tokyo was announced as the new host city for the 2020 Games with an event scheduled for July 24, 2019-August 8, 2020. If successful, Japan will become only the second nation to host the Games three times after Canada. However, if France fails to deliver on its promise of funding security for the event, then Japan could withdraw from the tournament.
Paris and Los Angeles were the only candidates before the vote. The other candidate cities - Budapest, Hamburg, Rome, and Madrid - did not make the cut.

The Summer Olympics will return to Los Angeles in 2028, more than four decades after the city last hosted the Games in 1984.
