The London 2012 Olympic Games were a sporting event that took place in London from July 27 to August 12, 2012. The modern Olympic Games were held for the 27th time in London. London became the first city to hold the modern Games three times in 2012, having previously hosted the Olympic Games in 1908 and 1948.

London was the second British city to host the Olympics after Birmingham in 1932. The games were originally scheduled to be held between April 23 and October 24, 2008, but they were moved to prevent clashes with other major events such as the UEFA Euro 2008 football tournament.
In total, 565 athletes from 33 countries participated in 92 events across 11 different sports. Women's soccer and women's basketball were the most popular events among spectators. Hockey was the most watched non-testosterone-boosting sport during these Games with more than 7 million viewers per match.

The idea for an Olympic site in England was first proposed by Lord Coe, who at that time was president of athletics' governing body, the IAAF. Later on, when he became chairman of the British Olympic Association (BOA), he managed to get approval for Londonsunite to host the games. London was chosen over other candidates like Manchester, Leeds, Sheffield and Newcastle because of its central location within Britain and the fact that it can provide all the necessities for a successful Olympic experience. The city has a large population of young people who will be interested in watching some of the events, such as gymnastics and tennis. There are also many iconic landmarks such as Big Ben, Tower Bridge and Hyde Park that will help attract visitors from outside London.

London's East End The Olympic Park in East London, which is home to a variety of new sporting complexes, served as the focal point for the London 2012 Games. The park attracted up to 180,000 spectators every day, making it the primary center of Olympic activities. It has been praised for its beauty and green spaces, including The Mall, which was used for the Olympic opening and closing ceremonies.
The mall itself was only open for four days during the games, but it still drew millions of people to see the ceremony performances and visit the various market places. After the games, most of the original features were preserved and the space was made available for public use once again.
A small part of the park is also located in South London, near Greenwich Peninsula. This area was used for sailing, water polo, and rowing events.
Outside of London, there are also two other sites where major events took place: Eton Dorney in Berkshire, where the canoeing and kayaking events were held, and Weybridge in Surrey, where tennis matches were played.
Overall, these three locations hosted nearly all of the sports events during the London 2012 Games.
