A fielder tries and fails to throw out a runner attempting to advance one base, although the batter would have been out. In addition, if a runner is called out for interfering with a fielder attempting to field a ball, no hit is granted. Finally, if the umpire deems that a batter has interfered with a fielder's attempt to catch a ball, then he is issued a walk. This is known as a strike three decision.
These are the only ways you can be removed from an inning on base hits. If a batter gets hit by a pitch or walks intentionally, the same thing happens again: He is removed from the game. A batter can also be dismissed for excessive arguing about calls made by the umpires.
The only way a player can leave a game during an active play is if he is injured. Otherwise, he must stay in the game until it is his turn at bat again. If a player feels that he cannot continue because of pain caused by an injury, he may be replaced by a pinch-hitter or manager (or coach) depending on how badly he needs to get out of the game.
A batter is not out if any runner attempting to advance is thrown out, or if a runner attempting to score is thrown out due to batter's interference. The plate umpire must call "interference" if the batter interferes with the catcher. The hitter has been struck out, and the ball is dead. There are three ways that a batter can be brought back from base on strikeout: a fielder can make an error, a bad call can be reversed by the manager, or if there is a fight near the dugouts (which rarely happens).
If the ball strikes the batter on the head or neck, then he is out automatically unless he is forced out. If the ball hits him in the arm or hand, he has been put out. If the ball hits him in the stomach or chest, he has been hit hard enough to bring him but not out. If the ball hits him in the testicles or groin, he has been kicked out. If the ball hits him above the shoulders, he has been killed.
If you were looking down when the pitch was made, you were probably just as safe as if you saw it coming. But if you were distracted for some reason, maybe watching the runner advance toward second, then you might have a problem.
A baserunner is out if he or she is struck by a fair batted ball while standing on a base, unless the ball has already past an infielder or the infield fly rule has been declared. For example, if a batter hits a line drive that bounces off the wall in left field and rolls around before falling into the arms of an outfielder, he or she is not out despite being put at risk by the flight of the ball.
The only way a baserunner can return to the game after being touched by a batted ball are if (1) the ball comes back into play after hitting something other than a player; (2) the batter reaches first base safely before the ball becomes dead; or (3) a fielder catches the ball with his or her bare hand. If any part of the ball remains in contact with a player after he or she has been touched by it, then he or she is out.
In addition to being out, a baserunner is also out if he or she is hit by a pitch. However, no matter how hard you swing at a pitch, you can never hurt it so long as you don't connect. A pitcher cannot throw pitches at random players on the bases, even if they're going for it.
In baseball, a hit that allows the hitter to reach base safely without the need of an error or fielder's choice. A base hit does not have to be touching the ball to be valid; as long as it is in contact with the ground, an outfielder cannot tag it out from under someone.
The term "base hit" comes from the fact that it is based on contact rather than distance. While a home run is by definition a hit that travels far enough into the field to be safe, most hits fall between these two extremes. A base hit can be scored even if the batter fails to advance himself around the bases (i.e., he gets thrown out while trying to advance), as long as at least one member of the team playing defense makes a legal play on the ball. If no such play is made, then the batter is awarded first base.
A hit that does not score any runs is called a base on balls. This occurs when a batter has the opportunity to bring the runner up across the plate but does not because he wants to give himself more chances to get a hit or make an error.
If a hit ball strikes the batter after he leaves the batter's box, the ball is dead and interference is called. The hitter is out, and the runners are restored to the base they were lawfully on at the time of the interference. If the batter remains in the batter's box, the umpire can call "Time" and award the baserunner first base by rule. This means that even if the batter did not make contact with the ball, he is still considered out.
This rule was put into place because it is dangerous for players if someone else's outburst causes them to leave their feet. A player is more likely to be injured if he or she leaves the ground when a ball is thrown at close range. In addition, people tend to focus on the player who has left his or her base rather than the runner who has stolen it so they don't see the other player tag up before he or she reaches first base.
However, this isn't always the case. If the batter leaves the batter's box but before the ball is struck he or she returns to its position before leaving it, an automatic walk is given to the batter. This allows the pitcher enough time to set up his or her pitch without rushing toward the catcher to begin his or her delivery.
