Sheffield Football Club was founded in the fall of 1857 and is the world’s oldest football club. The club is officially acknowledged as the world’s oldest football club by FIFA and the Football Association of England (FA). The history of Sheffield F.C. has been documented by John Higgs in his book, “The First Game - A History of Football” (Crowood Publishing, 2004). The book states that Sheffield F.C. was formed by a group of friends who met at a local public house called the Star and Garter. They decided to set up a team that would play on a field behind the pub. This team first played against another local team called The Wranglers, which had eight members who were all former students at the University of Cambridge. The game ended in a draw but there were enough features of interest to make it worth playing for so it became established practice to play games on public days with prizes awarded.
Huddersfield Town AFC was founded in 1866 and is the oldest club in the English Midlands. The club is based at New Leeds Road, Huddersfield HD1 4AR and their home ground is John Smith’s Stadium. Their official motto is Arma Virum Est Spes Viri (Man is the weapon of man).
Sheffield F.C. in England is the world’s oldest surviving autonomous football club—that is, the oldest club that is not affiliated with a school, hospital, or university. It was established in 1857. However, its origins date back much further: the first recorded game played by Sheffield F.C. was on 22 August 1857, when they lost 2-1 to Hallam F.C. based in Sheffield.
How did they manage to stay alive until now? Through luck and politics. When they were established, Sheffield had two other football clubs: Excelsior FC and St Paul’s FC. In 1858, these three clubs joined together to form The Original Football Club (OFC), which eventually became known as the Football Association (FA). The FA initially played only against local opponents but in 1863 it opened its doors to men from outside of Sheffield for the first time. They accepted applications from people who lived within 20 miles of Town Hall, Sheffield. The team with the most applicants would be awarded a license. That year, OFC applied for a license but didn’t win one so they dropped out of the league. In 1864, another club called The Wednesday Cricket Club asked to join the league. The owners of The Wednesday agreed to let them play under the name “Football Club” so the league allowed them to enter their application. Thus, the first FA League was born.
According to the Football Association, the world’s oldest club is non-league Sheffield F.C., formed on October 24, 1857, while the oldest league team is Notts County, founded in November 1862. Both teams now play in the English Football League.
Sheffield FC played its first match against local side Hallam F.C. at Hillsborough Stadium, now known as Old Trafford. The game ended in a 1-1 draw. William Deane was appointed captain of the team. This game has been recognized as the world’s first official football match by several organizations including FIFA and the International Federation of Association Football (IFAF).
Notts County was originally called Nottingham FC and they also played their first match against Hallam F.C. at the Hockley Athletic Grounds, now known as City Ground. The game ended in a 2-2 draw with John Goodall and James Moulson being named captains of the team. Notts County was accepted into the Midland Football Association when it was first formed in 1863. In 1866, the association merged with other leagues to form the Notts Alliance, which became the Central Midlands League in 1978 before switching to the National League South in 2018.
Football Football has been played in England since at least 1314. England is home to the world’s oldest football teams (going back to at least 1857), the world’s oldest competition (the FA Cup, created in 1871), and the world’s first football league (1888). England’s most famous club is Manchester United.
Basketball The British Basketball Association was founded in 1892. One of its members, William Shaw, invented basketball in 1891 while working for the Chicago Tribune
Cricket Cricket has been played in England since 1586 when it was introduced by English colonists who settled in the country. It became popular with upper-class people who played it during the summer months. Today, cricket is one of the most popular sports in England.
Rugby Union Rugby union was developed in England and is widely considered to be born there. The earliest written record of rugby matches dates back to 1823, but it wasn’t until 1845 that the first recorded international took place between England and France. In 1871, the British government funded the creation of the Oxford University RFC which is now one of the most successful rugby clubs in history. Today, rugby is the most popular sport in England.
Hockey Hockey was originally known as “cricket on ice” because it was played during the summer months (when cricket was held) and some people believed it was related to cricket.
Fulham Football Team, founded in 1879, is London’s oldest professional football club. The team was originally called “The Wanderers” and they first played their games on Wimbledon Common.
They were one of the original 12 teams who signed up to play in the inaugural season of the English Football League. The club went on to win the First Division title in 1890–91 and have continued to play at the top level of the English game ever since.
Currently playing in the Championship (the second tier of the English league system), they have won the division twice in the last three seasons. The club has also reached the FA Cup Final twice in the last three years. However, they lost 1-0 to Manchester United both times.
In addition to its association with Wimbledon, Fulham is known for its connection with Chelsea FC. Both clubs are based in West London and use the name “Cottagers” as a form of addressation. A number of players have transferred between the two clubs, most notably Ivorian striker Jean-Francois Domogalla who scored 46 goals in 91 appearances for Chelsea before moving to Fulham in 1996.
