He was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and raised by his single mother after his father died when he was young. He has two siblings: a brother named Eric and a sister named Laurie.
Goldberg played defensive tackle for the University of Miami (FL) Golden Hurricanes from 1985 to 1988. He started 33 games during his three years at Miami and was selected second team All-American by The Sporting News and third team All-America by the Associated Press.
After graduating from Miami, Goldberg went pro. He began his career in the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now known as WWE).
