Alaska does not have a collegiate football program. The University of Alaska Fairbanks and Anchorage are the two major schools. Fairbanks has a non-football NCAA Division I university status.
The Bulldogs and Norse compete in the WAC's North Division. UAF is also part of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Hockey League (NSIHL). The NSIHL is made up of three other universities: Colorado College, Minnesota State University, Mankato and Wisconsin Duluth. Alaska has won five national titles in hockey (1947, '48, '51, '52, and '53).
In addition to college sports, Alaska also has a professional football team called the Alaska Oilers who played in the World Football League from 1974 to 1975. The Oilers were originally based in Oakland, but moved to Alameda after only one season because there was not enough interest in football to keep them afloat financially. The World Football League was in its third year when the league collapsed due to financial problems. The only other player to ever catch a pass from Dan Pastorini was Ron Taylor of the Memphis Southrons. He caught eight passes for 108 yards in four games before being traded to the Atlanta Falcons for their second-round pick in the 1976 NFL draft.
The nine states that don't currently have an FBS school within their borders (Alaska, Delaware, Maine, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Dakota, and Vermont) are essentially tied for 42nd in our rankings. All of them have some sort of college football history, with several playing important roles in the development of the sport.
However, only three of these states had a team ranked in the AP Top 25 at some point this season: North Dakota's Team USA, which was ranked No. 24; Rhode Island, which was unranked but played in one of the most exciting games of the year against Massachusetts; and Vermont, which lost all five of its games this season including one to New York University by a score of 59-0.
In addition, two other states had teams that were eligible for post-season play but didn't receive any votes from the AP: Hawaii and Illinois. Both had winning records (Hawaii went 8-4 and Illinois 9-3), but neither was high enough in the polls to make the playoffs.
Finally, two other states had losing records (or 0-12 seasons) but still managed to earn a spot in the rankings this year: California and Michigan.
Sports. North Dakota has no significant professional sports teams. The North Central Conference is home to the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux and the North Dakota State University Bison. The University of North Dakota also fields a college ice hockey team.
North Dakota has two minor league baseball teams: the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks and the ValleyCats. The Redhawks play in the American Association and the ValleyCats play in the Northern League. Both teams are based in Fargo, North Dakota. The university also has a football team that plays in the NCAA Division I FCS (Football Championship Subdivision).
The Fighting Hawks/Sioux compete in most sports offered at UND. They are a part of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the Big Sky Conference. Men's basketball is their biggest sport with numerous players going on to successful careers in the NBA. Other popular sports include ice hockey, soccer, golf, tennis, and many more.
In addition to the above programs, North Dakota is also home to several other school teams including rugby, lacrosse, volleyball, wrestling, gymnastics, and more.
UND is not known for its sports program but that isn't always been the case over the years.
The Alaska Nanooks are the athletic teams of the University of Alaska Fairbanks, with the name originating from the Inupiaq word for "polar bear." Though commonly referred to as UAF inside the state, the university prefers to be referred to simply as "Alaska" for sports purposes. Blue and gold are the school colors. Women's athletics is known as "Nanooktics," and men's athletics is known as "UAFathletics."
Fairbanks was originally only a college campus, but now includes a medical school, so UAF has more academic programs than most small universities. However, its athletic program is still relatively small by Division I standards; in 2007-08, UAF competed as an independent because no other schools would grant it full status. The Nanooks are members of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) for all sports except women's basketball, which is part of the Northern Sun Belt Conference (NSBC).
UAF sponsors 19 varsity sports for men and women: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, hockey, indoor track & field, outdoor track & field, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, volleyball. They also have a semi-professional team, the Fairbanks Ice Dogs, in the International Hockey League.
When UAF was first established in 1967, it did not have any sports programs. It joined the WAC in 1989-90 after competing as an independent for eight years.

The University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) and Western Washington University (WWU) have joint agreements with the NCAA to play their games on campus in Fairbanks and Bellingham, respectively. UAA plays its home games at Sullivan Arena on the university's North Campus while WWU's games are held at Roos Pavilion on the West Campus. The schools also have collaborations in place that allow students living in either community to attend school without paying tuition.
In addition to these two universities, several other institutions have partnerships with Alaska Aces G League team that allow them to use the nickname "Alaska" without being included in the NBA or WNBA systems. These organizations include: the Alaska School Activities Association (ASAA), which allows high school students in the state to be eligible for college sports scholarships; the United States Armed Forces Academy (USAFA), which provides an educational program that prepares military personnel for careers as teachers or administrators in the civil service; and four junior colleges in Alaska that grant degrees at the associate's level or higher.
