After receiving clarification from the International Olympic Committee, the BCCI resolved to support the ICC's application for the inclusion of T20 cricket in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics at its Annual General Meeting in 2020. The meeting also elected Jagmohan Dalmiya as President of the Board while Diana Edulji became its Secretary.
Cricket was originally proposed by Australia as a demonstration event at the 1908 London Games but did not become an official sport until 1936. In 1952, cricket was included in the Olympic program for the first time since 1936. It has been played at every Games since then with the exception of 1904 and 1920 when baseball was held in the United States.
In 2008, the ICC decided to withdraw cricket from the 2012 Olympics because it could not come to an agreement with the Australian government on security issues. However, after consulting with the IOC, the BCCI decided to remain involved in the process despite Australia's withdrawal. At the end of 2009, it was announced that T20I cricket will be added to the 2016 Rio Olympics program. A year later, in 2015, the ICC confirmed that cricket will also be played at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. This makes cricket the only global sports event that is held every four years. The other major cricketing events are the World Cup and the Champions Trophy which are held every two years.
Following considerable discussion and politicking, there has been a fresh drive in recent years for cricket to be reintroduced to the world's greatest stage, with the 2028 Olympics being the earliest possibility. Cricket had its one Olympic debut at the 1900 Games in Paris. It was then removed from the program until 2008 when it was added back again.
The first ever World Cup final was also played at the Olympics, in 1930. The men's game has since become an annual event, while the women's tournament is held only once every four years. Neither country has won more than one title each.
Cricket is a relatively new sport in Japan, where it is most popular in major cities like Tokyo. The Japanese national team has never qualified for the finals of any global tournament. However, they did win the Asian Games in 1954 and 1998. They also took part in the 1987 World Cup but were eliminated in the first round by India.
In Australia, cricket is widely regarded as the national sport. The Australian team has won the gold medal in both the inaugural World Cup in 2003 and again in 2015. They have also won the ODI Championship three times - in 2001-02, 2007-08 and 2013-14.
India are the other big name in cricket sports journalism. They have won the World Cup twice so far - in 1975 vs England and 2011 vs Australia.
USA Cricket stated in November 2018 that it was seeking partners to launch a domestic T20 league in the nation by 2021, with the purpose of "engaging existing fans and growing new ones," as well as spurring "sustainable development of cricketing infrastructure across the United States." The league would be split into North and South Divisions with three teams per division. The Boston Rising Stars have been announced as one of the eight team participating in the inaugural season of the league.
Cricket is widely played in the United States. There are over 500 clubs and 60,000 active players nationwide. The largest regional league is the CCL National League which consists of four divisions with more than 80 teams from New York to California. First-class matches are played between major cities and counties throughout the year. In August 2008, the United States played its first international match when it took on India at Red Bull Arena in New Jersey. The United States won the match by eight wickets after being put into bat by India. In September 2009, the United States played its second international match when it took on Australia at MCG. The United States lost the match by five runs after being put into bat by Australia.
In October 2016, it was announced that the United States would be joining the International Cricket Council (ICC) in 2017.
The cricket world cup puts the world's best cricketing nations against one other. It is played in the 50-over format of cricket. There are competitions for both men and women. It first appeared in 1975. 2. Every two years, the ICC T20 World Cup conducts a T20 world cup (generally). The event is held under its own banner rather than that of the other major cricket tournaments - the Test match series known as the Cricket World Cup, and the five-day game called the World Series Cricket.
In addition to the men's and women's events, there is a youth version called the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup. This takes place every year and is only for players who are under 19 when the tournament starts. Finally, there is a team of retired cricketers called the ICC Cricket World Cup Committee which selects the countries that will compete in each edition of the tournament.
Each nation enters a team of 15 players in the men's competition and 13 players in the women's tournament. They can choose their squad within these limits, but once they enter the arena of play during the World Cup, they cannot change their lineup from day one until the end of the last match. A player has to be present at three of the four matches to remain in the tournament. If he fails to do so, then his country will be eliminated.
In addition to national teams, international teams also take part in the World Cup.
The planned format would consist of eight teams divided into two groups, followed by two semi-finals and two medal matches. The most likely format would be Twenty20 cricket, the shortest of the three existing international formats. It would be played over just three days with each team able to use only six players.
Cricket has been played at the Olympic level since 1900. In 2004, Australia, England, India, Pakistan and South Africa were the top five countries by number of Olympic medals won. Since then India has become the biggest winner with nine gold medals, more than any other country. Australia is second with seven gold medals, followed by England and Pakistan who have won six medals each. South Africa has won five medals.
In 2016, India will be the big favorite to win the first two games of the series against Australia. The third and fourth games will be held on August 11th and 18th in Delhi and Mumbai, respectively. India will be looking to continue its dominance over Australia in all forms of the game.
Australia will be without star fast bowler Mitchell Johnson due to a hamstring injury. This will be a huge advantage for India as it tries to defend its title.
