The Los Angeles offer (designed to pay respect to the first Super Bowl, which was staged at the city's Memorial Coliseum) was contingent on a club relocating to the region by the time the venue was chosen and a new stadium being built by the time the event took place. The Oakland Raiders were the first choice of Los Angeles officials, but they refused to move to L.A.
The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum is seen as the best option for the Super Bowl because of its location near Hollywood and Beverly Hills, two of the most popular tourist destinations in America. The stadium also lies only minutes from the Pacific Ocean, making it easy for guests to get into town for parties or shows after the game.
The NFL approved the Los Angeles proposal in January 1993. The Raiders remained in Oakland because owner Al Davis didn't want to play in L.A.. With no other options available, the league awarded the game to Los Angeles.
Super Bowl XXXIV was the culmination of a long process that began when the Oakland Raiders defeated the Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl XVIII. The proposed schedule was to have two early-season games being played on wild-card weekend and then the championship game on Monday night between the winners of those games.
However, there has been some discussion about possibly holding the game at a different stadium other than the one that hosted the original game. One option that has been mentioned many times is Santa Clara Stadium, where the 49ers used to play before they moved to San Francisco. Another possibility is AT&T Park in San Francisco where the Giants baseball team plays.
In addition to the Rams/49ers rivalry, there is also the City of Angels vs. the Country of California in this case against Hollywood.
Last May, NFL owners opted to shift Super Bowl 55, which was slated to be held in Los Angeles, to Tampa. The change was made due to weather-related building delays at the new Los Angeles stadium location, which will now host Super Bowl 56 in 2022.
