The final reason is history. College football has been played for much longer than the NFL. In fact, it started before the NFL itself was founded! As such, it has built up over time to become the most popular sport at university level.

In fact, according to research published by The Guardian in 2015, NFL revenue was $14.5 billion while the annual income of all FBS schools was only $120 million. That’s more than 17 times as much money as the entire FCS industry.
The reason for this discrepancy is that most big-time colleges don’t have athletic departments that can afford to pay their own players. Most play on large campuses with many students involved in intramural sports, club teams, and other non-competitive activities that don’t generate any revenue. Even if they did have such a department, it would be extremely difficult for them to compete with the salaries offered by the NFL. For example, according to Sports Illustrated, the average salary of an NFL player is $724,000 while the average FBS school pays its athletes less than $50,000.
In conclusion, football is more popular among universities but it’s also more popular among individuals. The NFL has better ratings because more people want to see great play, not because there are more fans out there.
The NFL is significantly larger. Many individuals have little interest in college football, while most people have a favorite NFL club and follow them to some level. From my perspective, college basketball is the inverse. Okay, OK. Both are huge and both have enormous media coverage.

The length of games is also longer in the NFL, usually about three hours or more. College football games typically last between 2 and 3 hours.
College football has a larger audience across the United States. The largest stadium that I know of is Memorial Stadium in Champaign, Illinois. It holds 102,500 people and is home to the University of Illinois. It’s estimated that it takes in around $15 million annually. That’s smaller than any NFL stadium but it shows that college football can be profitable if certain schools are successful. Some colleges make money off of their fans through tickets, merchandise, and food services like Dunkin’ Donuts and Papa John’s. Some schools may even earn millions of dollars per year.
In 2014, the NCAA football annual revenue was $1.3 billion. Of this number, $209 million came from television rights fees.
Even when two great teams are involved, regular-season NFL games often generate far larger ratings than regular-season college games.

They often hire coaches who will lead the team toward victory, and sometimes even pay them. This is particularly true if they are looking for someone who can bring fame to their school. Such coaches might come from outside the university or even from within it depending on how far down the food chain they feel they can go before finding someone willing to work with them.
Students usually enjoy watching football games at these schools because it gives them something to talk about with their friends.
