De Gea committed a mistake that resulted to a goal against Tottenham Hotspur in Manchester United's first game following the season hiatus imposed by COVID-19. This followed a string of gaffes against Crystal Palace, Watford, Arsenal, and Everton earlier in the season.
It was United's opener in the 4-1 win at White Hart Lane on August 26th. The ball was crossed into the box and De Gea failed to claim it. Alli took advantage of the gap left by the Spaniard and scored his second goal in as many games.
De Gea has been the subject of criticism from all angles this season - even from within United's camp - but this particular error proved costly. It was his fourth mistake of the campaign and only the best defenders can keep out players like Alli and Son Heung-min.
The loss of Luis Suarez for the season has been cited as a reason for De Gea's mistakes, with manager Jose Mourinho saying after the Spurs match that the player is "making some errors".
However, it is difficult to agree when De Gea is one of the best goalkeepers in the world and deserves all the praise he gets. A combination of poor form and criticism may have influenced the 24-year-old's mistake rate this season, but there is no denying his talent.

Tottenham Hotspur started the match well and had several opportunities in the opening minutes, but they were unable to find the back of the net for one reason or another. Then, just before the half-hour mark, Harry Kane found the back of the net after some great work by Davinson Sanchez who played him through on goal.
Almost immediately after scoring, Kane was involved in another chance for Spurs when he met Lucas Moura's cross with only the goalkeeper to beat but his effort went wide of its target. In the 44th minute, however, it took a brilliant piece of skill from Fred to give his side the lead for the first time in the match. After being picked out by Christian Eriksen, Fred calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner to put Spurs ahead.
Just three minutes later, though, it all went wrong for Spurs when De Gea made a wonderful save to deny Eric Dier after he was left alone in the box following a poor pass from Ben Davies.

Spain are scheduled to face Bosnia and Herzegovina on Friday night at 8 p.m. (1000 GMT). The game will be shown live on BeIn Sports.
On April 18, 2018, De Gea was named as the sole Manchester United player in the PFA Team of the Year for the sixth time. He had previously been nominated in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011.
De Gea has been outstanding this season and is now the first goalkeeper to be voted by his fellow professionals as PFA Player of the Year. The award ceremony will take place on Monday May 7 at the Royal Opera House in London.
He has won the award ahead of Liverpool's Jordan Henderson and Tottenham's Harry Kane.
The winners were determined by voting from their peers and there was no prize money involved. However, the winner does receive a trophy from PFA chief executive Gordon Taylor and a check for £10,000 (USD $13,500).
De Gea has already earned over £150,000 ($200,000) this season after signing new contracts with Man United in June 2016 and July 2017. He has also been selected as MVP by his teammates twice - in 2015-16 and 2017-18.
In addition to his work at Man United, De Gea has also featured in 157 games for Spain and has nine goals to his name.
