It is difficult to overstate the importance of free throws, both to teams and to players. A double-figure scorer is someone who can make 4 baskets each game and add 4 free throws to his total. The more times you can get the ball into the hoop, the better your team will do.
There are two ways to score in basketball: by shooting field goals or by throwing the ball through the basket (called "fielding"). Field goals are worth 3 points and free throws are worth 2 points. Throwing the ball through the basket is best used as a last resort, when you want to stop the clock but don't have enough time left to shoot another field goal. Free throws are special because they give players with less experience an opportunity to score. Even though shooting foul shots is hard, it isn't as hard as shooting field goals, which are usually done from closer range. Free throws are crucial because without them, games would go on for too long for most people to watch. 2. Technical fouls If you make all your free throw attempts, you will be awarded with a bonus point called a "fouled shot". Only one player can be credited with making a fouled shot at a time; therefore, if a player takes too long between their foul shots, the other team will get the chance to hit theirs.
The free throw When a team scores a basket, they receive two points and the ball is passed to the opposing team. A basket, or field goal, that is made outside of the three-point arc is worth three points. A free throw equals one point. Therefore, a throw that goes in the basket for one point would be equal to a make from inside the three-point line.
A jump shot is worth two points. A layup is worth one point. If a player shoots the ball and it goes in, but it was an off-balance shot or not cleanly executed, then it does not count for points. For example, if Joe Smith shoots the ball and it goes in, but it was an off-balance shot or not cleanly executed, then it does not count for points. He could have also used a throw. If he throws the ball in and it goes in, then it counts as a four-point play.
There are several factors that determine how far a throw can go in the hoop. The height of the scoring player when he releases the ball determines how high it can go. If the player is standing up, then the maximum height it can go is about 20 feet 6 inches (6.5 m). If the player is sitting down, then the maximum height it can go is about 19 feet 9 inches (6 m).
In a few ways, free throws differ from field goals. A field goal is worth two or three points, while a free throw is always worth one. No one is permitted to protest the shot, which is always taken from the free throw line. And most important, field goals can be made from anywhere on the court, while free throws must be made from within the free throw circle.
All of these factors make sense when you think about it: if you could score from anywhere on the court, then there would be no need for any other type of shot! Free throws are very valuable, because they cannot be scored unless the defense believes you will take them.
There are several reasons why free throws are more difficult than field goals. First of all, your hand may be in his face as he attempts to block your shot. This is not a problem for field goals, since you can simply step back and shoot again. With free throws, though, you have to actually reach into his defensive position and attempt to knock the ball out of his hands.
Secondly, you only get one chance per possession, so if you miss, the defense will run away with it.
Finally, free throws require skill and concentration, things that many people struggle with.
