University of Pennsylvania Penn State won the national championship in the 1986 NCAA Division I football season. In the Fiesta Bowl, they defeated Miami (Fl) 14-10 under Joe Paterno's coaching. It was the first national title for Penn State and the first for Paterno.
It was also the first national title for any Big Ten team since Michigan in 1989. The Wolverines were considered the clear-cut favorites to win it all before they fell to Ohio State in the last minute of the game. This year's champion, Florida State, also comes from the Big Ten, making two out of four titles in the league this decade.
The Miami victory over Penn State was not expected by many observers, but it did not matter much at the time because USC had just beaten Oklahoma 31-30 to claim its own share of the trophy. At the time, both teams were ranked in the top five; however, Penn State fell out of the top 10 after losing to Iowa the following week. Miami also lost a couple of games later on and finished behind Nebraska in the polls.
In 1987, Miami was still considered the favorite going into the season but lost its opener to Virginia Tech. After that defeat, the Hurricanes dropped out of the top 5 for good and never returned.
During the 1982 NCAA Division I-A football season, the Penn State Nittany Lions represented Pennsylvania State University. Penn State won Joe Paterno's first consensus national title by defeating the Georgia Bulldogs in the Sugar Bowl, 27–23. They were ranked #1 during most of the season and finished with a 10–2 record. Their only loss came at home to Michigan State, who they went on to beat for the National Championship.
Their full schedule was released on April 15, 1982. They opened their season with a 26–6 victory over Pittsburgh. They then traveled to Happy Valley to play Oregon State. The game was tied 7–7 after three quarters but Penn State won 19–14 when Mike Guman kicked a field goal with 1:54 left in the fourth quarter. They returned home and defeated Army by the same score (19–7). This brought their winning streak to four games. They ended the season with victories over Wisconsin (47–0) and Iowa (49–7).
In October 1982, Joe Paterno was named the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Coach of the Year. The team was also awarded its first No. 1 ranking, which is still intact as of 2017.
They have been ranked No. 1 ever since.
