After losing to UConn in the semifinals of the 2013 tournament, Louisville made sure that no one could catch them this year as they took down Michigan State in the finals to claim its first national title since 1989. Coach Rick Pitino is a former UConn coach who led the Cardinals to the title game four times during his tenure there.
Louisville played without star point guard John Wall due to injury. He missed the entire season after breaking his leg early in the 2012-13 season. Backup PGs Peyton Siva and Terry Rozier combined to lead the team against Michigan State.
Women's basketball, Connecticut Huskies, 2015 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Tournament/Champion.
UConn defeated Kentucky 68-64 to claim its sixth national title. The Huskies were undefeated during the season and beat UMass, Louisville, and Baylor by only three points each. They also had a one-point win over South Carolina during the season's final round of games. Shabana Hameed was named the tournament's MVP after scoring 26 points against Kentucky. She became just the third player in NCAA history to score 1000 points during their career. Loreen Simon was the other two players who reached this milestone during their careers.
There are several reasons why UConn is so successful at basketball. First of all, it has one of the best coaches in the business in Geno Auriemma. He has led UConn to six national titles during his time at the school and has an overall record of 240-34. During that period, he has also developed many talented players who have gone on to play professional basketball. In addition to Auriemma, those players include Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi, and Stefanie Dolson.
Men's basketball, Kentucky Wildcats, 2012 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship Game/Champion.
The Kentucky Wildcats men's basketball team defeated the Syracuse Orange 73-69 to win its second national title. Kentucky was undefeated going into the game and had not lost since it opened the season with a 32 point victory over North Carolina State. The Wildcats were considered heavy favorites to win their second consecutive title after they went 11-0 in the month of March to claim their first national championship in school history. Freshman star John Wall was named the tournament's most outstanding player after he averaged 19 points, 6 assists, and 5 rebounds per game. Fellow freshman DeMarcus Cousins also contributed significantly, averaging 14 points and 10 rebounds throughout the tournament.
Wall declared for the NBA draft following his junior year at Kentucky but returned for one more season in Lexington. He was selected first overall by the Washington Wizards in the 2010 NBA draft.
Cousins decided to stay in school for another year instead and was drafted third overall by the Sacramento Kings. He signed with the New Orleans Pelicans but was later traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder in exchange for Anthony Davis.
