The San Francisco 49ers will meet the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship game. The victors of each game will proceed to Super Bowl LIV on February 2 in Miami. Check out the schedule for the conference championship games below:
San Francisco at Green Bay, Sunday January 20, 4:40 p.m. ET
This is the first meeting between these two teams. The 49ers are 11-4 while the Packers are 12-3.
In San Francisco, both winners of their games will advance to the NFC Championship Game. In Green Bay, only one team can advance based on record.
The 49ers beat the Atlanta Falcons 27-20 in overtime of a wild card round game on January 3 at Levi's Stadium. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo passed for 347 yards with three touchdowns without an interception. Running back Tevin Coleman had 121 rushing yards and a touchdown. Wide receivers Kendrick Bourne and Emmanuel Sanders both caught nine passes for 136 yards and a score.
On defense, linebacker NaVorro Bowman returned from injury and recorded five tackles, one sack, and one fumble recovery. Cornerback Richard Sherman was ejected for throwing his helmet after a penalty flag was thrown against him for unsportsmanlike conduct.
The 2021 NFC Championship Game has been etched in stone. The Green Bay Packers will face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC Championship Game, with the winner advancing to Super Bowl 55.
The game will be played at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay on January 12th at 4:40 PM EST. It will be the first NFC Championship Game played in Florida since 2008.
The Buccaneers won the division title with a 10-6 record last season. They defeated the Atlanta Falcons 34-33 in overtime of their first playoff game this year. Quarterback Jameis Winston did not play due to a shoulder injury he suffered during the fourth quarter of that game. He missed the rest of the season and the Bucs picked up where he left off in 2020 by beating the Chicago Bears 24-20 in the wild card round before defeating the Packers.
The Packers finished the regular season with a 11-5 record. They were able to defeat the Dallas Cowboys in the Divisional Round after losing to them during the regular season. First-year head coach Matt LaFleur brought in some much-needed change to his offense by hiring former MVP Aaron Rodgers as his new quarterback. He will try to lead his team to their first NFC Championship game since 2013 when they lost to the San Francisco 49ers.
The San Francisco 49ers are a professional American football club headquartered in Santa Clara, California, that competes in the National Football League (NFL). The 49ers have five Super Bowl triumphs (1982, 1985, 1989, 1990, and 1995) and seven NFC crowns. They are one of only three teams (the New York Giants and Chicago Bears are the others) to have won the NFL title with a quarterback not named John Elway or Joe Montana.
The franchise was founded as the Cleveland Browns in 1946 by the owners of the defunct Boston Redskins. The move was part of an effort by the team's new owner, Bill McBride, to have a baseball teamshare time with his football team. The Browns were immediately successful, winning their first nine games before finishing with a 7-4 record. In their first season under the new name, the 49ers finished with a 10-1-1 record and went on to win the NFL Championship.
This is the second time these two teams have met in the NFC championship game; they played each other twice in the 1982 season, with the 49ers winning both games. In 2023, the game will be held on January 11th. It will be played at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. NBC will broadcast the game live from 8:15-10:15 PM CT.
In 2024, the game will be held on January 10th. It will be played at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. ABC will broadcast the game live from 4:25-6:35 PM EST.
In 2025, the game will be held on January 9th. It will be played at Ford Field in Detroit. ESPN/ABC will broadcast the game live from 6:45-8:50 PM ET.
In 2026, the game will be held on January 7th. It will be played at Atlanta Falcons Stadium in Atlanta.
The NFC title game will be played at Lambeau Field, marking the first time Aaron Rodgers has started a championship game at home, after the top-seeded Green Bay Packers defeat the Los Angeles Rams.
The venue is also where the NFL's annual awards ceremony is held. Brett Favre was the last Packer to win the MVP award when he was victorious in 2009. The winner will be announced on January 24th.
Lambeau Field is located in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The stadium is so named because of its reputation as a tough place to play football. It opened in 1957 and has been expanded three times since then. The most recent expansion added about 10,000 more seats and changed the appearance of the stadium somewhat.
The NFC Championship game will be a rematch of this year's Super Bowl. Both teams were undefeated before they got into that game - the Rams coming off a 41-0 victory over the New Orleans Saints, and the Packers beating Dallas 33-27 at home. In fact, the last time these two teams met was back in November when the Cowboys beat the Packers 27-23 at Texas Stadium in Arlington. That was just four days after Thanksgiving and it guaranteed a Green Bay victory this time around.
Since the end of the NFL playoffs in January 1971, the winner of the American Football Conference (AFC) Championship Game has met the winner of the National Football Conference (NFC) Championship Game. In the inaugural AFL-NFL World Championship Game, the Packers beat the Chiefs (Super Bowl I). Since then, there have been 10 more Super Bowls, with only the Patriots and Steelers failing to win at least one title.
The most recent championship games were played on February 2, 2018 at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay, Florida. The NFC champion Los Angeles Rams defeated the AFC champion New England Patriots by a score of 13-3. This was their first championship since 2004. It was also the second consecutive year that two different teams had won the Super Bowl each year from 2017-18.
Both the Rams and Patriots have multiple championships. The Rams are heading to their second straight Super Bowl after defeating the Eagles in the final game of 2017 season. The Patriots are going for their third title in four years after defeating the Colts in last year's finale.
Los Angeles went into the game as 3.5 point favorites but they never trailed throughout the game. They scored on their first three possessions while giving up just three points over the same span.
Drew Brees of the Saints threw for 288 yards and three touchdowns but he also threw an interception.
