Ovtcharov was born on February 2, 1983 in Sofia, Bulgaria. He is a two-time Olympian who competed at the 2004 Olympics in Athens and 2008 Olympics in Beijing. During these games he won a gold medal in the men's team event and a bronze medal in the singles tournament. At the 2012 Games in London he won another gold medal this time in the mixed doubles with his partner Ekaterina Makarova.
He is currently ranked first by the ITTF.
Before winning two Olympic medals, Ovtcharov was already a successful table tennis player. In 2001, he became World Junior Champion. Two years later, he claimed the senior title. In 2005, he defeated Lee Sung-hyun in the final of the World Cup to become the first Bulgarian to win the competition.

In 2014, he became the youngest ever semifinalist at the French Open, at the age of 17 years and 4 months. At the 2019 Wimbledon Championships, he became the first Australian to reach the quarterfinals of the tournament since 1976 when John McEnroe was defeated by Jimmy Connors.
He has been praised for his aggressive play which includes frequent use of the "mic drop" move, and his charismatic personality has made him one of the most popular players in Australia.
Kyrgios's mother is Greek and his father is Italian. He was born in Melbourne but raised in Los Angeles due to his father's career as a tennis coach. His parents divorced when he was young and he moved with his mother to Sydney, where she met her current husband Paul Annacone, a wealthy real estate developer. They have two other children together, a daughter and a son. His mother then moved with her new family to Florida so she could be near her other child, sister, and mother. She now lives in California.
