This marks the second time the Bucs have appeared in a Super Bowl; they lost to New York Giants 23-20 in Super Bowl XIX. This will be the third time the NFC has sent two teams to the big game. The Los Angeles Rams went 0-3 during these playoffs appearances in 2016 and 2017 while the Saints were knocked out by Dallas in 2018.

Coming off back-to-back 11-5 seasons and making their third playoff appearance in four years, Tampa Bay was favored by many over New England. However, the Buccaneers were considered contenders due to their strong offense led by quarterback Jameis Winston and running back Doug Martin as well as their defense that ranked second overall during the regular season. In addition, Tampa Bay had never lost a Super Bowl game before this occasion.

In Super Bowl 55, the Kansas City Chiefs and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will square off, and as with other NFL games, one club will be designated "home," while the other will be labeled "away." Here are the rules that govern the Super Bowl champion's ability to rename their football: If any portion of the game remains after the end of the second quarter or any subsequent period, the title holder can ask that the trophy be brought out for them to honor by putting its name on it. If this happens, the Chiefs or Buccaneers (depending on who wins the preceding round) will get to keep the trophy until the next season's Super Bowl.
The only team to have their game ball permanently renamed is the 1972 Miami Dolphins. Before the start of the 1973 season, the AFL and NFL agreed to merge their league champions into one super team. The new NFL/AFL merger team was known as the Miami Dolphins.
The 2021 NFC Championship Game has been etched in stone. The Green Bay Packers will face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC Championship Game, with the winner advancing to Super Bowl 55. The conference championship game will be held at Lambeau Field on Sunday, January 24. It will be the first postseason game for both teams.
The Packers won the first NFL title game played after the 1958 NFL merger, defeating the Hindu Yankees 34-14 at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Tampa Bay ended its season with a 5-11 mark after dropping all four games in December. The two teams will meet again on January 24 at Lambeau Field.
