The report estimated that Messi's salary was around $20 million. With his contributions to the club as well as the country, he deserves all of this money and more. After retiring in 2018, Pele is now ranked number one with a salary of $12 million. He is followed by Cristiano Ronaldo ($11 million), Leo Messi ($10 million), Johan Cruyff ($8 million), Michel Platini ($6 million), Edson Arantes do Nascimento ($5 million) and Franz Beckenbauer ($4 million).
Out of respect for his achievements after his death, the report did not include Luis Enrique or Xavi Hernández in their ranking of the highest-paid players in the world.
For the first time, the report included data for players from outside the United States and Canada. Brazil's Neymar Jr. is the highest-earning player in the world, with earnings of $95 million.

The annual list was compiled using information provided by sports agents, financial records and an estimate of current transfer values. The report states that while salaries have increased for all but two players on the list (Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo), both of whom are among the five best players in the world, they are now worth more than ever before.
Luis Suarez of Barcelona is the only player to appear in each of the last five lists, with his salary increasing every year as he attempts to win the Ballon d'Or award given to the world's best player. Last year, Suarez took home $80 million after helping Barca win its third consecutive Champions League title.
Suarez has been involved in several controversies throughout his career, including biting an opponent during a match against Liverpool and deliberately kicking Giorgio Chiellini during a World Cup semifinal match against Uruguay.
