Jose Maria Maria Jose (born January 12, 1976) is an athlete, singer, and ballet and flamenco dancer. He is a two-time Olympic medalist, having won silver in the team competition at the 2004 Olympics in Athens and bronze in 2008 in Beijing. He also holds the record for most gold medals by an individual sportsperson at the World Championships with five.
Maria Jose was born in Madrid to Spanish parents who moved back to their home country when he was just a few months old. He grew up in Barcelona where he began learning dance at a young age from his mother, who was a ballet dancer before becoming a primary school teacher. His father died when he was only 11 years old so he could not follow him into professional dancing but instead chose a different path by joining an army dance group when he was 16. It was here that he met his future wife Natalia, who was also a member of the group. They have one son together named Juan Fernando.
After leaving the army, he started working with a dance company called "El Gabinete de Bujora" (The Buccaneer's Team). Here he learned how to flamenco dance which became his main focus after leaving the company.
