The story of Tom Daley, who won a gold medal for his country at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London by diving into one of the most exciting events in sports, starts with an average childhood. He was born on January 4th, 1992 to Peter and Denise Daley in Marsworth, West Yorkshire, England. His mother was a gymnast who competed for Great Britain during the 1980s; his father worked as a miner. When Tom was five years old, his family moved to Southend-on-Sea where his father took a job working as a security guard. There, he met another former gymnast named Amanda Lockhart who worked as a waitress. They fell in love and got married in 2005.
Tom Daley started learning how to dive when he was eight years old. His father took him to visit a local pool because it was easy to get to from their house. Soon after, they formed a diving club at their school called Southend Aquatic Club. The young athlete decided that he would like to compete in the Olympics one day so he could be represented by Britain instead of America because they are both considered countries now.
Gregory Alan "Greg" Best (born July 23, 1964 in Lynchburg, Virginia) is an equestrian athlete and instructor in the discipline of show jumping who earned two silver medals for the United States riding the renowned Gem Twist at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. Best's shoulder was fractured in a tumble in 1992. He returned to competition four years later at the 1996 Atlanta Games.
On August 19, 2008 it was announced that Best would be leaving the U.S. Equestrian Team after 17 years to pursue other opportunities. He cited family as being the most important factor in his decision making process. Best had been offered a job with a German horse farm but decided not to take it up on offer.
He is currently based in Florida where he runs a business coaching athletes and helping them deal with issues they face when trying to make a transition from the competitive arena to life outside of sport.
Best is the father of three children: daughters Ella and Eve and son Gunner. The family lives in Palm Beach County, Florida.
He graduated from The Lawrenceville School in 1982 and then went on to graduate from Princeton University in New Jersey in 1986 with a degree in economics. After graduating from Princeton, Best attended Harvard University for one year to study for a master's degree in public policy before turning pro full-time.
There are five more Olympic Games yet to be held. He has also won three gold medals at the Commonwealth Games and nine gold medals at the World Rowing Championships. The sports are all rigorous, and in order to even have a shot at making it to the Olympics, an athlete must have trained in this hard activity for the most of their lives. Athletes are frequently so consumed by their training that it consumes their entire existence. It is not unusual for an Olympic gold medal winner to have failed to win any other major awards during their career.
The best athletes in the world come together for these games, but they are only as good as their team. An individual sport like track and field is very difficult to succeed in, because you can never know how you will do until you try. Thus, many top athletes prefer team sports like soccer or basketball where they can play several roles and be counted on for something other than their own effort.
In fact, almost without exception, every single one of the athletes who has ever won a gold medal at the Olympics had previously earned some sort of award for being America's best baseball player, football player, swimmer, etc. A few exceptions exist - mainly due to the nature of certain events that rarely if ever result in any type of monetary reward - but overall, athletic achievement at the highest level is based largely on success in other people's minds. If an athlete wants to compete at the Olympics, they usually have to prove themselves by first winning some national championships or major international competitions.
"Athlete" is a broad term for someone who participates in sports. Olympic competitors compete for gold, silver, and bronze medals, and the winner is referred to as a medalist. The word "athlete" is also used to describe people who participate in other competitive activities, such as chess champions, ball players, and circus performers.
The word "athlete" comes from the Greek athlektos, which means "to compete." In modern English, the word "athlete" is used to describe anyone who engages in competition as their career or as a pastime. However, in ancient Greece, an athlete was someone who competed in sports held at religious festivals or games for entertainment purposes rather than for money or fame.
Only men can be athletes because women's sports were not included in ancient Athens until the mid-fifth century B.C. When they did begin competing, they were only allowed to take part in events that were considered masculine pursuits. The first female athletes may have been celebrated heroes who fought in battle but did not engage in physical activity themselves. They would have worn armor and weapons like their male counterparts but would have stood behind them yelling encouragement.
In classical Athens, an athlete could be either a spectator or a participant.
Professional athletes are now permitted to compete in the Olympic Games alongside amateur athletes. Two sports, however, resisted the introduction of professionalism at the Olympics. Wrestling and boxing are examples of these sports. In both cases, a professional league has been formed which allows its participants to earn money through competition.
Amateur wrestlers and boxers can be identified by the presence of a "O" logo on their uniforms. Professional wrestlers and boxers do not have this logo because they are represented by contracts with promoters who pay them salaries.
In wrestling, the match is decided when either the opponent or the wrestler falls down first. The fall must be due to bad technique or injury and should be reported by the referee. If an illegal move is used, it does not have to be reported by the referee as long as it does not cause damage to the body. For example, if a wrestler uses a hold that turns the wrist outward, that hold is legal but may cause pain and injury to the exposed bone structure.
In boxing, the fight continues until one fighter fails to answer the bell for further rounds. A boxer can win or lose his or her contest by knock-out, technical knockout, or decision. These types of victories and losses are all recognized by the judges and lead to awards being given out.
Marja-Liisa Hamalainen won four medals, including a gold medal sweep in all three individual cross-country distances, to become the Games' most successful athlete. Gunde Svan of Sweden also won four medals in the men's competition, however one less gold than Hamalainen.
Olympic gold was won by a British ice duo. After winning gold in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia, Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean have been declared Olympic ice skating champions.
