Europe's nine automatic selections are now Jon Rahm, Tommy Fleetwood, Tyrrell Hatton, Rory McIlroy, Viktor Hovland, Paul Casey, Lee Westwood, Matt Fitzpatrick, and Shane Lowry. The remaining spots on the team will be filled by players who have been selected as part of Europe's "Captain's Picks" process. These players will all get an opportunity to prove themselves against the best golf in the world.

The prize for winning the European Tour is called the Green Jacket. It is given to the player who finishes first in the official money standings over the course of a season.
The earnings of players who finish in the top 10 are increased if they have "status" on the tour. This means that they can play in all European Tour events without having to pay entry fees. Players who finish outside the top 10 must pay an entry fee to play in these events.
Players gain status by finishing inside the top 30 of enough official events to meet their requirements or by earning enough points through the Order of Merit. The requirements vary depending on how long it has been since the last major tournament played but for example, players need to have finished inside the top 15 at least once in the previous five years to be considered for status.
There is no limit on how many times players can apply for status provided they meet the requirement each time.

The Ryder Cup teams are decided in a somewhat different manner from Team USA to Team Europe, but the essentials are as follows: Each team leader selects four players for his squad; the remaining players are chosen automatically based on point or money lists. The maximum number of players on either team is 14, and only 12 players actually play in each match. If a team has more than 12 players, the excess are removed from future Ryder Cups held during that period. Teams often remove lower-profile players in order to bring the total number of players on the team closer to 12. For example, if one team has 10 players and another has 13, that team could remove one player from its roster in order to fit 12 players on the plane to France.
There is a lot of discussion about whether it would be better to have more than 12 players on a team or not.
