The son of Louis and Louise Howard, he was born on January 4th, 1979 in Atlanta, Georgia. His parents moved to Virginia when he was young so that his father could pursue his career as a dentist. He has two brothers, one older than him named Louis Jr., and one younger named Austin.
As a child, he showed an interest in sports from a very young age and played many different games including football, baseball, and soccer. Basketball was not his first choice of sport though, since he wanted to be like Michael Jordan. However, when he was 10 years old, the Atlanta Hawks signed him as an honorary captain for their youth teams. He also played on the school's baseball team as well as taking part in track and field events.
After graduating from Woodberry Forest School in 1998, he entered University of Florida where he spent three years playing college basketball. As a freshman, he averaged 6.7 points and 5.3 rebounds per game while as a junior, he scored 14.0 points per contest and led the Gators to the National Championship game where they lost to Duke University.
