The 26-year-old from Mitchell, Indiana, will be accompanied by seasoned crew chief Johnny Klausmeier, who worked as Bowyer's crew chief last year. Briscoe will compete for the Sunoco Rookie of the Year award alongside Anthony Alfredo of Front Row Motorsports.
Stewart Haas Racing began competing in NASCAR races in 2004, when it entered a team into the Busch Series. It took several years before it started fielding cars in the Cup series, but in 2009, it finally happened: Stewart Haas Racing became a Ford team. It remains so today; however, it does have other brands that it fields cars for during different periods of time.
In its first five seasons, Stewart Haas Racing has never finished lower than fourth place in the standings. In 2014, it was third behind Hendrick Motorsports and Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates.
In 2015, Stewart Haas Racing had one of its most disappointing seasons ever. It started out well, winning the pole position at the season opener in Daytona Beach. But after that, it lost every race it entered until it finished last in the standings with just two top-10 finishes all season long.
Ben Beshore, who has moved up from the Xfinity Series to the Cup Series with JGR, will now be in charge of the No. 18 crew. Team outlook: Last season, Denny Hamlin was the lone Joe Gibbs Racing driver to make the championship four. He finished eighth overall - his best finish since 2014 - and he won three races along the way. Hamlin will be back again this year with new sponsorship from Mike Curb's car collection. He'll be joined by rookie Dillon Taylor, who made some noise during the spring race at Daytona International Speedway before getting knocked out of the lead lap by a speeding truck.
Beshore, who is no stranger to JGR having worked with Martin Truex Jr. last season, will be assisted by former NASCAR driver David Reutimann and former IndyCar driver Alex Zanardi as engineers and Ryan Preece in the media center. The team will continue to use the same primary sponsor (M&M's) and secondary sponsor (7-Eleven) as it did last season.
Joe Gibbs, who recently announced that he is stepping down after this season, has named Beshore as his successor. Beshore, who lives in Mooresville, N.C., will be responsible for leading the team on and off the track during the season. Under his guidance, JGR plans to remain competitive while also developing younger drivers such as Taylor for future seasons.
Pitbull and veteran racing car driver Justin Marks are the team's co-owners. The team will make its NASCAR debut in the 2021 season-opening Daytona 500, with Suarez driving the No. 99 Chevrolet. He will be accompanied by his wife Erica and their three children.
Suarez has been working with Hendrick Motorsports since 2014, when he first joined Rick Hendrick as a sponsor for several races during the season-ending Ford Championship Weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The following year, he became a full-time driver for the organization, finishing 21st in the standings. He remained with Hendrick through the end of his contract in 2018, before signing with Stewart Haas Racing for the 2019 season. The team released him after one race due to marital issues involving Suarez. He later filed for divorce from Erica after five years of marriage. In January 2020, it was announced that Suarez had signed with Joe Gibbs Racing as a driver development program participant. However, this was short-lived as less than two weeks later, Suarez was suspended for six months by NASCAR for violating its substance abuse policy. During this time, no race activities or practices will be permitted.
In August 2015, it was reported that Suarez had purchased a partial stake in the team. He later acquired the remaining share in March 2016, becoming 100% owner of the team.
