The New York Mets New York, New York The Mets signed free-agent relief pitcher Trevor May to a two-year, $15.5 million contract to boost their bullpen ahead of the 2021 season. May was set to become a free agent after the 2020 season.
He worked 88 games for the San Diego Padres in 2019 and saved 26 games while posting a 3.38 ERA and 1.077 WHIP. He'll be the team's new closer.
Mets fans should know that May is not the first pitcher from California to join the Mets. Matt Harvey, who had a very good year for the Mets, came from Los Angeles where he spent most of his time at Harvard University. Before joining the Mets, he never played a day in the major leagues.
Harvey went 16-3 with a 2.70 ERA during his only season with the Mets before being traded to the Chicago Cubs. After one season with the Cubs, he moved on to Texas where he will likely be remembered for this moment during Game 5 of the 2017 World Series against the Trumpeters.
Matt Harvey walks off the field after giving up a home run to Donald Lutz of the Chicago White Sox. The Mets would go on to lose that game 4-3 and eventually lost the series 4-1.

Instead, think about the future with Cincinnati Reds pitcher Trevor Bauer and ESPN baseball expert Jeff Passan. Following MLB's pause agreement with players over compensation, service time, and other concerns, see how it will set up the 2021 collective bargaining agreement. The 2020 season is still going on, but it's important to look forward instead of back.
Bauer was one of the best pitchers in baseball before he got hurt last year. He returned this year and has been even better than expected. The 24-year-old has a 1.95 ERA with 155 strikeouts in 133 innings pitched this season. He's coming off surgery to remove bone chips from his elbow and is already being talked about as a possible MVP candidate.
He'll be free to sign with any team after this season, but most projections have him ending up with the Redbirds again. They'd like to keep him in Cincy, but if another team offers him a big contract, they may be able to beat them out by offering more money now rather than later. Either way, he's had a huge impact on the Reds this season and we should all enjoy watching him pitch for a while longer.
