Despite the fact that a logo had been created and venues were being planned, the league and its nine teams were acquired by the AF2 on July 29, 1999, and the Xtreme Football League never played a single game. The AF2 made its debut in a game between the Birmingham Steeldogs and the Tennessee Valley Vipers in March 2000. (two of the acquired XFL teams). The Steeldogs defeated their AFL opponents 43-0.
The league was plagued by poor management and ownership changes. Only two teams - the Memphis Maniax and the Nashville Kats - remained from the original eight-team league. The other six franchises were Atlanta, Baltimore, Birmingham, London, New York/New Jersey and Tampa Bay.
The AF2 attempted to compete with the XFL by using many of the same players and adding more than 100 former NFL players to its rosters. However, it failed because of its expensive price tag ($100,000 for admission fees) and lack of popularity among fans who preferred the much lower-cost XFL games.
After two seasons, the AF2 ceased operations due to financial difficulties. Many of its former owners decided to move their teams to the XFL, which allowed them to get out from under their debt. The only team that did not move was the London Blitz, but instead it became an expansion team.
The Memphis Maniax were the first AF2 team to play in the XFL. They were scheduled to play against the Tampa Bay Storm in March 2000.

FC Xanten was founded in 1896 and joined the German Football Association (DFB) in 1902. They became one of Germany's most successful clubs during the 1950s and '60s, winning the national championship in 1956 and earning the nickname "Die Blau-Weißen" ("The Blue-White Ones"). In 1997, Xanten merged with local club SV Xanten to form FC Xanten/SV Xanten.
Xanten's first team currently plays in the 3rd Bundesliga Südwest. The club was promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga Nord in 2011 and has since been playing there annually except for 2012 when it finished seventh out of eight teams. Xanten also has a second team called Xanten II which plays in the Regionalliga West.
Xanten's first team played in the Bundesliga from 1956 to 1960 and in the Oberliga Westfalen from 1961 to 1995 when it retired from professional football due to financial problems.
History. Arsenal, Brentford, Chelsea, Clapton Orient, Croydon Common, Crystal Palace, Fulham, Millwall, Queens Park Rangers, Tottenham Hotspur, Watford, and West Ham United founded the Combination in 1915. Matches between the first and second teams were held until 1919, when reserve teams took over. In 1920, the league merged with the Metropolitan League to form the Southern Football League. The Athenian League was formed in 1964 by former members of the Athenian League and Eastern Counties League.
Today. The modern day format was introduced in 2003 and comprises a regular season followed by a series of semi-finals and then a final at the end of May. The top two teams from each division qualify for the knockout stage. The winners of these matches go on to play in the Premier Division the following season. A third-place playoff is played between the team that finishes third in each division.
Key facts. The largest stadium in the Combination is Guy's Cricket Ground which has a capacity of 10,000. The smallest stadium is called Mead Road and has a capacity of 250 people. The Premier League has announced that the tournament would be rebranded beginning with the 2016-17 season.
The Niners were one of three AAFC teams welcomed into the NFL when the league disbanded following the 1949 season. The Niners and Browns are the only two of these three clubs that are still in the league. The Los Angeles Dons were the AAFC's second club on the West Coast, but they were less successful and were not admitted into the NFL. They did, however, give rise to the current incarnation of the San Francisco 49ers.
The Browns joined the NFL as an expansion team in 1950, while the 49ers played their first season in 1951. The AAFC's Houston Texans also entered the NFL that year. This may help explain why there are now three remaining NFL teams -- since some players will have more than one career with different teams -- instead of the expected two.
The Texans became the first AAFC team to win a game when they defeated the Chicago Bears 14-7 on December 29, 1947. The last game was played four days later when the Cleveland Browns lost to the Philadelphia Eagles 7-3. The Niners and Browns both moved to Baltimore after their second seasons and were renamed the Ravens and Bays, respectively. The Ravens won the Super Bowl in February 2013 after defeating the New England Patriots en route to becoming the first AAFC team to do so.
The AAFC's final champion was the Pittsburgh Steelers, who finished the 1948 season with a 9-3 record.
