How many black actors have won a Golden Globe?

Sixteen of the 19 nominated performances received Academy Award nominations or wins. Morgan Freeman, Samuel L. Jackson, and Mahershala Ali each had two nominations in this category. In this category, Louis Gossett Jr., Denzel Washington, Eddie Murphy, Mahershala Ali, and Daniel Kaluuya have all won. No black actor has ever won more than one Golden Globe in this category.

The first Golden Globe Awards were held in January 1949 at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. African Americans were not allowed to enter the hotel through the main entrance; they could only be let in through a side door. Therefore, when accepting his award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Louis Gossett Jr. made his way down the aisle of the room by walking from person to person until he reached the front desk where there was a white man who gave him his prize.

In the years that followed, other categories with no black winners included Best Actress (only winning once by Hattie McDaniel) and Best Supporting Actor (which didn't win until 2004).

But beginning in 1991, things started changing. Three out of four nominees in this category were black or Latino, with Murphy becoming the first black actor to win. Since then, several more black actors have won including Kaluuya in 2018 and Washington in 1999.

However, it took another eight years before someone else won. Ali won his second Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor - Motion Picture.
