Barça has been designated as the best team in the world by some publications including France Football, while others have named Manchester United as the best team in the world. But none of these rankings take into account how many other teams have played each season - so they can't be used to compare the overall greatness of each squad.
Barcelona has won five UEFA Champions League crowns, four UEFA Cup Winners' Cups, five UEFA Super Cups, three Inter-Cities Fairs Cups, and three FIFA Club World Cups. They are the most successful club in Europe over the past 50 years.
They are also the most decorated club in international football with five European titles at the Club level and one title at the international level (FIFA Club World Cup).
Their record is not as good as it looks like because they have never lost an official competition where they were defending champions.
The last time they lost was in the 1973 Cup Winners' Cup final to Ajax when they were beaten 2-1 at the Olympisch Stadion. Barca went on to win the cup by beating Leeds United 4-0 in the final at Stadium MK. That loss remains the only one in their history during any major tournament.
Barca has won almost all there is to win in international football so it's not surprising that they are ranked first here. However, some people might think that Chelsea or Manchester United are better players than Barca players. This is definitely not true though because Barca is considered one of the best teams in world football.

The history of the European Cup/Champions League dates back to 1955, when English club Liverpool won its first title ever. Since then, only English teams have won the trophy, with the exception of Italian club Juventus in 1996.
If we look at the main trophies won by any team, it is Barcelona, which has won 92 major trophies and will shortly win La Liga, bringing the total to 93. There have been 18 Serie A (or Italian top-flight) titles, seven UEFA Champions League (or European Cup) titles, five Italian Cups, and four FIFA Club World Cups. Their most recent Serie A championship was in 2010/11, while their most recent UEFA Champions League triumph was in 2006/07.
However, the club's most successful period in terms of domestic titles was the 1960s, when it won eight league championships. It is also the only Spanish football team to have won five straight titles, a record it has accomplished twice (1960-1965 and 1985-1990).
During this period, players like Alfredo Di Stéfano, José Manuel Ortiz, Miguel Ángel Lotina, Francisco Gento, and Enrique Collar were at the helm. After these successes, things started to go wrong for Real Madrid. In 1970, it lost the championship title to Barcelona, which is still considered one of the biggest upsets in sports history. Since then, no other team has been able get back to win the title.
In 1992, after finishing second last, the board of directors decided to disband the team because they could not afford to keep playing in the top flight. But before doing so, they made an offer to Manchester United player Roy Keane to join the team as manager. He accepted the offer and spent three seasons achieving two first-place finishes in the league. After this success, he moved to Ireland where he took charge of the national team.
