Wrestling is popular in Haryana because of several national-level wrestlers who have come out of this state. Out of these top wrestlers, Chandrarao Prasad Pandey and Gama Singh are considered among the greatest Indian wrestlers of all time.
Pandey was one of the main protagonists in the 1947 film Wrestling Champion which portrayed his life story accurately. He worked as an actor in this movie.
Pandey won a gold medal at the 1951 Asian Games held in Delhi and also won bronze medals at the 1954 Asian Games and 1958 Asian Games. He remained undefeated during his career and won all his matches by pinfall or submission.
Pandey retired from active wrestling in 1959 but continued to coach others until his death in 2009 at the age of 90.
Gama Singh was one of the most successful wrestlers in Asia in the 1950s and 1960s. He won a silver medal at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics and a gold medal at the 1959 World Wrestling Championships held in Tokyo.
Kushti, Indian Wrestling, Vallamkali, Jallikattu, and other ancient sports have grown popular in India. India is also well-known for its rich culture and customs. Mallakhamb, commonly known as the pole dance of India, is a traditional sport in India. It is one of India's most demanding sports.
