Real Betis was founded in 1898 by English soccer player Arthur Richardson (who also helped found Brighton & Hove Albion FC). The club's home stadium is Benito Villamarín which has a capacity of 35,000. Their main rivals are Sevilla FC, with whom they contest the Betis-Sevilla derby. Other major rivals include Barcelona and Madrid who both come to Betis for games called El Clásico.
Betis is the only club from Spain's Andalusia region to have reached the UEFA Champions League group stages. In 1964-65, they were undefeated in La Liga during either half of the season before losing 1-0 to Valencia at the end of the campaign. Two years later, they finished as runners-up to Barcelona. In 1977-78, Betis made its first appearance in the European Cup when they took on Hamburg SV in the preliminary round. However, they were eliminated after losing 3-1 on aggregate.
Club de football de Espana In its 91-year existence, Real Madrid has won 91 national and international trophies. Furthermore, they have risen to the top of our ranking of the top ten most successful Spanish football clubs of all time. On March 6, 1902, Real Madrid was formed, making it approximately 118 years old. This makes them the most successful club in Spain.
They are also the most popular team in Spain with 55% support ratings. Barcelona comes second with 20%.
Real Madrid was founded by a group of sportsmen who played for several other teams before joining together to form one entity. The original members were: Alfredo Di Stéfano (football), Santiago Bernabéu (horse racing), José Manuel Moreno (canoeing) and Ramón Nuñez del Viento (cyclist).
They first entered the league in 1898 and from then on, they have never looked back. Their first official title came only five years later in 1903 when they won the Copa de Honor de Rugby. Through the years, they have continued to be one of the most successful clubs in Europe, winning various titles such as four European Cups, two Intercontinental Cups, one Supercopa de España, one Club World Cup and many more.
Besides being the most successful club in Spain, they have also been ranked number one in the world by FIFA on several occasions.
Real Madrid is also the most successful club in terms of international titles, having won 25, more than any other club in the world. Raul is the club's all-time appearance maker, with 741 appearances from 1994 to 2010; Cristiano Ronaldo, the club's all-time goalscorer, with 451 goals in all competitions. They are followed by Alfredo Di Stéfano and José Manuel Fernández de la Mora with 50 trophies each.
In Europe, only Juventus has more titles (eight). In La Liga, Real Madrid has won six championships and two European Cups. Additionally, the club has one Spanish Cup and one UEFA Super Cup title to its name.
When it comes to individual awards, there are several players who have won medals of recognition for their performances while wearing the jersey of Real Madrid. These include the Golden Ball, which is awarded to the best player at the FIFA World Cup; the Golden Boot, which is given to the top scorer at the tournament; the Pichichi Trophy, which is given to the highest scoring player in La Liga during the season; and the Balón d'Or, which is an award given to the best footballer in the world. There are also several other awards that can be considered "team" awards because they are given out annually by particular organizations - the Balon d'Or is awarded by France's L'Equipe magazine, for example.
However, the club's most successful period in terms of domestic titles was the 1960s, when it won eight league championships. It is also the only Spanish football team to have won five consecutive titles, a feat it has accomplished twice (1960-1965 and 1985-1990).
During this time frame, Real Madrid also became one of the first European clubs to attract a significant audience in America. The club had considerable success in the 1950s, with three European Cup victories, but it was in the 1960s that it really caught on overseas. Between 1963 and 1970, they played in the Yankee Stadium stadium in New York City alone, winning or drawing every match. In those days, soccer wasn't as popular in America as it is now so these games drew large crowds. After playing in New York, Real Madrid would travel across the country to other cities such as Chicago, San Francisco, and Los Angeles where more games could be seen by fans.
The club returned to California in 1994 when it played in the inaugural Major League Soccer (MLS) championship against local powerhouse Barcelona. Although neither team was able to score in the game, which ended 1-1 after 90 minutes and 2-2 after extra time, MLS decided to award the title because there were too many international players on both sides.
