France France won the tournament, defeating Italy 2-1 in the final on a golden goal by David Trezeguet after Italy had equalized with a last-minute goal, and became the first team to win both the European and global championships. The victory also marked the beginning of the end for France's drought without either title or medal since its World Cup triumph in 1998.
Italy Had Won Before: No other country has ever won both the European Championship and the World Cup - except France and Italy themselves. Both countries have been champions of Europe on five occasions each. However, France is the only one to have done so while being world champion, having won in 1998 when Italy came in second place. The Golden Goal rule was used for the first time at a major tournament when France scored in the last minute of the final against Italy to claim their first championship in 32 years.
France had been beaten by Italy in their only previous meeting during the qualifying rounds for France 1998. In that game, French striker Olivier Giroud had given his side a first-half lead before Roberto Baggio scored twice in the last 15 minutes to earn his country a 2-2 draw. France went on to finish as winners that year.

This is the first time that Germany has been defeated by a non-European team in any major competition. France was not expected to do well in Europe given that they were drawn against Portugal, England, and Italy in their group. However, manager Didier Deschamps opted not to pick French players for these games so that his team can qualify directly as winners of the group. He decided that it's better to go all out for victory than play it safe to reach the next stage.
Germany lost all three matches - against Portugal, England, and Italy - but didn't lose any by more than one goal. They played some excellent football throughout the tournament but weren't able to take advantage of their chances. Manager Joachim Löw said after the game that his team lacked killer instinct. He also admitted that he would have liked to have another chance to pick his best players. But anyway, this victory will help France move up into second place in the world rankings.
The match took place at the Stade de France in Paris.

The last French club to win the European Cup was Bordeaux in 1984. Since then no French team has even made it to the final. However, France has always been represented by at least one side during the finals since 1996, when Juventus defeated Arsenal 1-0. The last time that France had two teams playing in the final was in 1956 when Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea met up for what would be the last time until 2020 when the finals will return to Europe.
France has never won the Champions League but they have got close on several occasions. They were within a few minutes of victory in 2009 before being knocked out by their European rivals Germany.
