Jose Dinis Aveiro, Ronaldo's father, was the equipment manager for the local team Andorinha. When he died at age 44 from a heart attack, it left Cristiano without a father figure to guide him through some difficult times.
After leaving school at the age of 14, Ronaldo played for several more teams before being invited into the youth system of Sporting CP. In 2001, when he was only 16 years old, he made his debut for the club in a match against Estudiantes de La Plata and scored two goals in a 3-2 away win. He went on to score 18 more goals in just 25 appearances during the 2001-02 season.
Ronaldo moved to Real Madrid for €7 million ($8.5 million) in 2002, where he continued to impress with his scoring skills. By 2004, he had become one of the most sought-after players in Europe after scoring 42 goals in all competitions for his new club.
