The decision on where to hold the games is made by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The last IOC vote for a new host city was made in 2009, when Oslo was chosen over Madrid and Changchun in China. The election is the only occasion when athletes' votes are taken into account. They can choose either one candidate or multiple candidates.
In 1896, Athens was awarded the first Olympic Games. Since then, these annual international sports events have been held in various cities around the world. The most recent Olympics were held in Rio de Janeiro in 2016; London had previously hosted in 2012. The city will host the winter games for the first time, however it previously held the summer games in 2008.
The decision was made at a meeting of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Buenos Aires on December 1, 2009. It was reported that President Hu Jintao of China supported the proposal to hold the games in Beijing. The Chinese government announced its intention to bid for the games on April 2, 2007. If successful, this would have made China only the second nation after Russia to host the games three times. However, the campaign was later dropped due to financial difficulties and political turmoil within China.
China has been working hard to develop its sports industry and is hoping that these games will help bring more attention to sport in China. Li Jianmin, chairman of the IOC executive committee, said "We are very pleased that the world's best athletes will be able to compete in Beijing for the third time." He added that holding the games in China was important for promoting sports in that country. IOC President Jacques Rogge also praised the decision, saying "This is truly an inspiration for all of us who believe that sports can have a major impact on society today, especially in challenging circumstances."
The 2020 Summer Olympics were initially slated to take place in Tokyo, Japan, from July 24 to August 9, 2020. However, following the decision by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on January 23, 2015 to remove Tokyo from the Games due to safety concerns related to the ongoing nuclear crisis, a new host city was selected through an election held during the 115th IOC Session in Lima, Peru on September 3-4, 2015. The new host city will be announced at the 2017 World Championships in Helsinki, Finland.
The Olympics are always held in the summer months. They are usually held around the fourth Sunday of August. However, since 1918 when they were last held in Europe, the Olympics have been held later in the year to avoid a conflict with another major sporting event - such as the FIFA World Cup or the European Football Championship - that tends to be held in the summer.
In fact, the only time when this rule did not apply was in 1916, when France and Germany went to war over colonial issues. So the Olympics were not held that year either.
Since then, the only other time when the Olympics weren't held in the summer was in 1952 because of a conflict with the FIFA World Cup.
