The FA, which was founded in 1863 in England, is in charge of the game there. So the first game of football with the term "soccer" was played in England. Although most English football fans dislike the term, they simply refer to the game as "football."
The first official international match was played between the United States and Canada on November 4, 1872, at Hamilton's Park in Hamilton, Ontario. The United States won 2-1.
Canada has never forgiven America for winning that first match. It's a sore subject for Canadians to this day.
Anyway, history shows us that Canada is not a country who can play soccer. They don't have a national team that can even make the world stage. There are just five countries that don't belong to continental bodies that have ever appeared at a World Cup finals tournament: Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, and South Africa. No one has ever heard of any of them except Canada.
Even though Canada has no professional league, it's still popular here. We have a large community of supporters called "Caps Fans," so we're expected to do well at tournaments.
We've had some good results over the years. We were undefeated at home during the 1950s and also reached the quarterfinals of the 1986 World Cup without losing a game.
